I have a 4 hr time difference with my partner at the moment and will be signing up for an one soon. We use Whatsapp all the time to each other and it helps that we have a target in mind as to when I will move back to the UK. We have made it work for a year so far and although it hasn't been easy we've made it

With a one year contract and returning domestically, you need not worry about any damage or repercussions of breaking or leaving contract mid year. You could ghost the experience or explain it very easily domestically. No ones really going to care about a reference for half year that was overseas. Its a non-issue.

There is a significant difference between a 1 year visiting teacher position, and the start of an IT career. If he cant/wont leave and you dont get married allowing him to join you your relationship "dating" isnt likely to work for multiple years apart.
