Brazil is better but it depends where you are in Costa Rica. Living expenses are very low, but salaries tend to be low as well, and some schools (lower tier) have shared housing. This makes it really hard to save, because you can only do so much with a meager salary, you could be extremely frugal and still only have a couple thousand at the end of the year. A number of ITs in S.A. wish they would have just spent their money rather then living cheap, when they saw how fast the $10K both of them combined had saved after 2 years. Transportation is another potential expense, as some schools are way off the beaten path, and its either, walk, bike, drive, or take the school shuttle, I find ITs in S.A. more likely to have a vehicle out of necessity.
The people are generally very friendly, but petty crime is an issue, your going to get pick pocketed and anything not in your hand is likely to get swiped, its a poor country, and expats are all targets. The woman are pretty attractive, and theres plenty of a social life, if your in a big enough city. I find that sun and sand lovers and outdoorsy types are the ones who are most attracted and tend to thrive the most in Costa Rica. Aside from that its typically the starting point for an IT to get in, get their 2 years and get out. The others that stay long term, tend to be those that get married to a local and have kids.
