Benefit Packages

Post by gengrant »

When considering an offer, of course salary, health insurance, flights, housing, dependent tuition are important, but I'm curious to know what "extra benefits" would one find in a Tier 1 contract package - or any package for that matter?

Allowances for
- shipping
- settling-in
- monthly transport
- pursuing masters / doctorate (on a monthly / yearly basis)

Also, very few elite schools offer the following:
- Contribution towards children's college tuition
- Health Club membership
- Interest-free car loan
- Help with financial planning / retirement (some schools bring in outside professionals and offer free advice)

PD and utilities.

PD: some schools will send you for any training you want, paid in full, and offer tuition assistance. Others will expect you to pay for everything.

Utilities: some schools pay for all utilities, other schools pay nothing. In some countries, water, electric, internet, and a landline phone add up to a huge chunk of money every month.

A PD allowance is a great extra little benefit to have. You have the usual PD and workshop stuff provided by the school, and then some extra cash for other PD you're interested in. It's great if you're doing a Masters and also good for attending extra workshops, depending on how much they give.

Other nice perks at some of the better schools I have been at:

Friday happy hours on campus (food & drink provided by the school)
Stipend for groceries
Doctor on campus

One school in Southeast Asia even had a vacation home in the mountains and at the beach that each staff member got to use once each year

-Interest free loans are a nice perk
-Free laptop/tablet or interest free computer/car loan
-Transportation allowance
-Free tuition for children

I think one of the nicest perks is a housing allowance in cash where you can choose where you want to live and go under/over your budget accordingly. Some schools will say they give you free housing but it is in school property (usually not great)
