I've applied for a couple of posts that were advertised in the first week of December. I haven't heard anything (apart from a brief, "you'll be hearing from us" generic email). I'm figuring they are just building a pool of candidates to come back to after the holiday. Would you agree with that? I'm assuming they aren't going to tackle them before the holiday, that's why no further emails.

Very probable.
With one likely wrinkle, based on what my school is doing. We're contacting our very favorite candidates now for Skype interviews.
After the holidays, in and around the fairs, we'll seek out the second rank of those we liked.
