Jobs for two (teaching couple)

Post by WiscoKid »

As the jobs continue to pop up all over, it is not the easiest to always find employment for both of us (teaching couple) at schools. It makes me a bit nervous, but I am not sure how big of an issue this is. Are schools willing to "create" positions for the other spouse if one does not exist? Should we still apply to schools that only have a job for one of us in hopes they would take us both (as long as we are honest upfront that we have a spouse looking for employment as well)? How does this transfer over to the recruitment fairs?

Qualifications are as follows:
Me - Business and Technology teacher, tech. integrator, MA in Curr. and Inst.
Wife - grade 1-8 English/LA, Reading Specialist, Admin. License

As part of a teaching couple and veteran of two fairs I know how you feel and feel it every time we want to change school.

You have to do the research when you want to apply to a school with just one position. Will you make do on one job? Will the school consider your spouse to be a go-to substitute teacher. I believe it is very rare for a school to just make up a position for a spouse just because they want you so bad.

I think as you go down the quality of schools, you may find that they are more flexible. Leading up to fair two years ago, there were maybe 2 or 3 in Search database with jobs for both of us but when we got there we had maybe 7 or 8 interviews.

It's a waiting and . game.

Yes schools will "create" a position for a trailing spouse. It depends on the school, what you can offer, and how much they want you. In my experience, even if a school wont create a full time position (with foreign hire package), they will often discuss a part time, or local hire package for a trailing spouse as a teacher aid, tutor, substitute or other support position. Primary/elementary school trailing spouses have better and more successful options. It would be much more difficult with a trailing spouse that was say an art teacher, when the school already has an art teacher.

You need to decide how important it is for you to both get full offers if you have a difficult time finding suitable paired vacancies.
