Oberoi International School

Post by somuchtosee »

Does anyone have any information about Oberoi International School in Mumbai? What's it like to work there? Live there? It seems to be well out of the city so should be quite a nice physical environment but is it possible to get around? Any information appreciated.

Getting further away from the cities typically means less resources and infrastructure support.

I was there several years back for a college fair (4 or 5 years). Their facilities looked okay, but not great. It's interesting that their photo gallery of the campus is not working (hmm?).

It may have been a ways to downtown Mumbai, but I wouldn't call it rural by any means. Suburban perhaps. By comparison, we also visited Pathways (Aravali?) outside of Dehli, and that felt very rural.

Unfortunately, I don't have knowledge about working there or live there.

Good luck.

For India, good package.

Psyguy, their facilities are quite good from what I've gather. It's a matter of willingness to invest. They are in Mumbai, which basically means they can buy whatever, and it will be cheap.

Parents are extremely happy with the education that their kids are getting there.

I know some people heading there this year and they seem happy. School seems decent, all in all.

I too was offered a contract and will go there in July. I signed along with another guy at the Dubai Search fair. But I have been able to learn very little about the school.

Update on Oberoi School India please

Post by Nefertari »

Good morning. As I am considering a position at the Oberoi school in Mumbai, could someone please update their posting above. I noted that a couple of the posters above offered to put their thoughts on the school on this forum once they began a position at the school in July. This would be greatly appreciated as there are no reviews on this school presently. Thank you in anticipation.

There are a lot of openings at Oberoi IS for August 2015. I lot of teachers have left mostly because life in Mumbai is less than exciting ... or even tolerable at times.

Oberoi is situated next to a green zone (Aarey colony). It is also next to the highway. Transport can be horrible though, as the roads are packed, especially at peak times. If you are planning to enjoy the expat events in the south of Mumbai (as there are many), you are long drives away (from anything in between 1 and 3 hours). On the other hand, it's more green here, and easier to leave town to the north (there are some get-away places). For those trips, it's best to hire a driver.
Yes, Mumbai is not an easy place to live. No big shops, all is rather shabby, and you will be in rikshaws a lot (they do have meters, so no bargaining necessary). If you live next to the school (in Oberoi Woods), you have a great advantage: you can walk to school. Many of the staff with kids live here. There is a play area (nothing special) and a pool. Kids can run around safely.
The Oberoi mall is close by, you can even walk there. Cinema, some restaurants and the obvious brand shops. Imported wine and beer are expensive, but local wines form the Nasik area are alright to enjoy.
You can/will have a maid/nanny, affordable. Health care is good in Mumbai. You have a high deductible though (Scholar/Clements). Buying meat is not as easy as back home, specialised shops or a few of the big supermarkets carry supply. Many Indians order (just about anything) on-line. Works great, and you save time.

Students: for the majority -> lovely and mostly Indian. You will like them.

Hope it helps a bit
