Thank you all for your advice. I haven't been back on because our school is passing the lovely stomach . around. Despite multiple attempts to avoid contamination, I still ended up sick :(

I am still hopeful for a DoDEA job first, but will take something from an IS is if it desirable and will allow for a little savings and happiness.

I sound just like you! Except you know what DoDEA is and PYP....Oh boy! Can someone tell me what lingo I need to know to interview well? I'm confident in my teaching skills and past experience, and Im sure have strong recommendations, but dont know much about this whole interviewing for abroad jobs. I'm going to Cambridge too in Feb. Somehow I feel confident....guess I should update the resume for starters.

DODEA is the US Dept of Defense schools. They use a totally different system of hiring and are basically US schools on military-bases abroad.

MYP/PYP/DP are acronyms for the courses in the IB. International Baccalaureate. You should be conversant in this because many international schools use some portion of the IB. Here's a link to the website.
http://www.ibo.org/

Having IB experience can really improve an international teacher's marketability.

Depends on what your going into, education tends to be full of acronyms.

DODEA=Department of Defense Education Activity. They do indeed run the military on base education system. DoDDS is the sub branch under DODEA that operates overseas schools. DDESS is the sub branch that runs state side domestic schools.

IBO=International Baccalaureate Organization. Their organization manages a world wide global curriculum and assessment program, where students can get an IB Diploma, that is generally accepted and recognized world wide. Students that score high on the assessment can get college credit much like the AP program. Their program contains 3 components.

PYP=Primary Years Program, the IB elementary program consists of grades 1-5.
MYP=Middle Years Program, The IB middle school, and lower secondary program, it covers grades 5-10.
DIP (DP)=Diploma Program, the IB upper secondary program that culminates in the In examination and ultimately the diploma. It consists of grades 11-12.

CAS=Creativity, Action, Service, this is the IB community service component
TOK=Therory of Knowledge, this is the IB social and cultural awareness within the context of academics. It's a blend of philosophy and social science.
Essay=This is the IB "honors" thesis or paper requirement.
Personal Project=This is the IB MYP 5 project, and original project that typically serves as the research for a students essay.

Some other terms:

AS=American School (such as SAS, or Singapore American School, Singapore AS)
IS=Intenational School (such as ISB, or Internatioal School of Bejing, IS Bejing)

PGCE=Post Graduate Certifcate in Education, a post Bachlors certificate program in the UK that serves as the entry level teaching credential. It is awarded by a university and consists of almost all academic work. It is called a PGDE (Post Graduate Diploma in Education) in Scotland, Wales and parts of Australia. This is the credential typically required of an international school.
NQT=Newly Qualified Teacher, this is the professional component of a teacher certifcation program in the UK. It's the student teaching, internship, field experience component.

Clarification

Than you for the technical accuracy. I was trying to put them in context to the American education system, for a frame of reference. I don't know very many educators that would equate ale eels to a standard public school diploma back in the states.
