What to expect?

Post by WiscoKid »

My wife and I are teachers in the States and we are looking at attending our first recruiting fair early next year. We are both teachers with masters degrees and my wife has an administrative (principal) license. She is licensed in English/reading/Language and has a reading specialist masters. She has been teaching for 10 years and is now a reading specialist at the middle and high school levels. I have been teaching four years and have a certification in business education and I also teaching technology classes every day. We have no overseas teaching experience, but have friends in the circle as well as friends that have recently gotten out. We are married and have two small children (4 yrs. and 6 months).

I am interested in what we can expect for opportunities? We really want to focus on the middle east and SE Asia. Any other suggestions of things we can do to set ourselves up for success? Thank you.

Well what are your expectations? Is your wife looking for a teaching position or administrative? Are you both looking for positions (I ask because your kids are pretty young, who is going to stay home)?

Its good that your interested in the ME and Asia, those regions have pretty high demand.

In my experience the "Best" case scenario, is if your wife can get an administrative offer at a good school in one of your regions (which is very realistic and doable for her), and if there is a business/economics vacancy you possibly teach, otherwise your the trailing spouse. Thats a reasonable expectation.

I can tell you for sure we are both looking for jobs in schools . My wife isn't necessarily set on a teaching job and would be willing to take administrative if the possibilities came about. In fact I think she may rather take a position like that, but she doesn't have any international experience. Myself, I would like a teaching job. I can teach business or computers or I would be willing to be a technology integrator or Technology Director. Eventually I would love the opportunity to get into administration or athletic director as
well. I can't imagine either 1 of us would stay home. Most of our friends that live overseas have nannies and we would most likely do the same.

As 4 our expectations, that is what I'm looking for. I am not sure what I should be expecting. We have a list of 5 or 10 schools we would really love to get into. Given our teaching experience I am not sure what is realistic.

The recruiting period for admins is now, so if that's of interest to her then you need to start now. Your wife is the front card for the two of you, given the regions you've mentioned a tier 1school as a teacher, and a tier 2 school as an administrator is realistic. The hard part is really going to be hoping that one of those schools you like happens to have a vacancy for you, but you seem pretty flexible which is a plus. I don't know what your list is, but if its all the DOS schools, or the elite schools, that's not a likely outcome. The lack of IS experience and IB experience is going to be a barrier.
