Toronto Fair/Opportunites?

Post by pupkus7 »

My wife and I have wanted to teach abroad for some time now and finally decided to register with Search Associates. I have been teaching AP physics and Chemistry for 2 years now and am certified to teach high school math. On the other hand, this is my wife's first year teaching biology, but she is also certified to teach chemistry and math.

I heard that the Boston fair is much more active than any other fair, but our advisor wants to send us invitations to the Toronto Fair.

Will this lower our chances of finding "better" positions? Are our qualifications good enough to land us in a good situation to begin with?

PS: we have no dependents and are looking to find jobs in Asia (China, Taiwan, etc.)

Any insight would be greatly appreciated and thank you to those have contributed to this website ... it has been invaluable to us.

Kristian & Desiree.

You're obviously registered with Search already, but depending on where you live, you may want to consider Iowa or even Kingston (Ontario), both of which are in January or possibly early Feb. I was originally hired for international teaching at the Queen's fair in Kingston and it was a great place for freshly graduated teachers (it's held at the university's teacher college).

I think you're marketable in the sense that you are both specialists in major subjects. On a side note, how do you feel about working together in the same department?

My guess is that you would not be able to obtain a top tier placement, but after you both get a few more years under your belts at some other international school, you would pretty much have your pick of quality schools (assuming you don't have a bunch of kids by then).

Fairs

Toronto is a dump fair, it's the same time that everyone who matters will be at the Search London fair, which is one of the BIG fairs. Your associate is trying to fill some seats at what's going to be a very small fair with some third tier and ME schools.

You will definitely be lowering the prospects of getting at better schools. The BOS fair is one of the big three fairs, but the real top fair in BKK. With your resumes, and expectations, you should definitely be going to BOS.

Thank you for the replies. PsyGuy, from what I've seen, I've figured as much about the Toronto Fair. I'll express to my associate that I would much rather prefer the invitation to the BOS fair.

We had another question:

Both of us have Temporary Teaching Certificates, of which mine expires on June 30th. They give these out in florida to those who didn't major in education before becoming teachers.

Is this a problem with international schools? I only need to take 2 online classes for my Full Professional Certificate, but my wife can't meet her requirements for the Full Certificate before June.

Any advice on this?

Thanks again.

My advice is to drop the "temporary" from your certificate. Your state just choose a bad name for its entry level certificate. You have a "teaching certificate", nothing more is needed.
