Visas will be a barrier unless you are in a shortage subject as new rules mean that you must make a minimum of 35,000 to qualify for tier 2 genral visas starting next year, and unless you are HOD will not be able to reach that threshold.

If thats £30K thats going to be a significant hurdle to overcome. I dont see how high needs or not will change anything. High needs DTs/ITs dont really make more, unless they have TLR responsibilitys, but that would modify salary regardless of subject area.

Shortage list subjects are not on general tier 2 and won't have to meet the minimum salary requirement.

I'm currently teaching primary in the UK, and yes there is a teacher shortage in most of the schools in the vicinity. The government have changed pensions and workload and lots of teachers are leaving the profession. But what is happening is that schools are tending to use supply teachers and waiting to see if the teachers are good before offering them a permanent role.
Just to warn you, the workload is ridiculous, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.
