Re: Define an International Teacher

I wouldn't say that you are necessarily content not to 'grow old and retire without ever seeing the world'. I have friends who have lived and travelled all over, but they are not teachers.

Re: Help Please! Advice needed on best combination for coupl

The secondary science teachers I know are always inundated by high schools. If you prefer teaching younger children, then why not work towards becoming an Elementary teacher, but while he qualifies in secondary science - I think this would be a great combination for employability.

Re: Honest thoughts?

I don't think it's unrealistic! I have less teaching experience than you, no IT experience either, yet got a couple of offers from schools in Europe at a job fair earlier this year. Like you've said, you just need to be open minded about where you go, but in my humble opinion most countries in (all parts of) Europe are fantastic in their own way.

Re: Experienced teacher, Married to non-teaching spouse with

Thank you for sharing this information, Mjkresko! It was very interesting to read.

My issue is slightly different - I am not married but my partner and I are both intending on making the move together to wherever I end up. He is not a teacher (and does not want to be), but his career means he could find employment around the world, including flights, visa and mostly importantly accommodation - I would not expect to share school provided accommodation with him. I thought this wouldn't be a problem as it meant I'm not a 'package' and schools wouldn't have to fork out any more money for him, so I recently changed my Search profile to reflect this.
However, it has definitely put schools off - more than once I've come to the final stage and a school has said my relationship makes it 'too complicated', with one school even presuming that if he ever had to return home while I was still teaching, it would be emotionally too difficult for me (?).

I really think my relationship is not a school's business if it doesn't affect my contract so I wanted to remove it from my Search profile, but my associate has told me to keep it on there. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but since I added those details I have gone from being e-mailed by interested schools nearly every day to struggling to get a response from the ones I contact myself. I'm getting rather worried that this will have a continual negative affect on my employment chances!

Re: Contacting recruiters through Search

Ethnoreligious reasons: there are some countries in the ME that I would not be allowed to enter, others where - from the looks of things online - I would be advised to keep quiet about my background, which is not really ideal.
This is my third year of teaching nalfc, but the first was part time while I got my MA, so that probably doesn't count in the eyes of most recruiters. I haven't given up entirely, but I know it is getting very late in the game - it will soon be past the point where I am allowed to hand in my notice in my current position, anyhow. Luckily I work at a very good school so it is not a desperation situation and I can wait another year, but I've always intended on teaching overseas so I'd really like to get started ASAP!

Thank you so much for your quick replies, everyone - they are very helpful! How reassuring that you found your jobs that way, newchapter and nalfc. I hope I am as lucky :)

Re: Had my interview. It didn't go well.

I am sorry to hear the interview didn't go as planned. If you are looking for experience, have you considered an Intern application with Search? I know it is probably not ideal, but it sounds as if it might suit your situation: 'Intern positions are available for graduating seniors and recent college graduates who wish to spend an academic year working in an international school. Intern candidates may have teaching certification/qualifications and some teaching experience, but are not required to do so. Internships are paid positions with the same benefits given to teaching candidates, such as housing, round trip airfare and more. '

Re: Best school in Korea?

I've heard good things about Busan International Foreign School, but does anyone have information on Busan Foreign School? The last couple of reviews on the paid site sound more optimistic, so I'm hoping it is an improved place to work?

I'm surprised to read that - all 13 reviews of Lincoln on the paid site are glowing; what is awful about it? Thank you!

Sorry for the aside, but I've read that Aramco only hires Americans. Just wanted to confirm if that is true.

Re: North London Collegiate School Jeju

It's nearly two hours by public transport (1h 48 min from NLCJ, to be precise). I've been to Jeju before and had a scooter there but after years of living in cities and not needing a car, I wouldn't want to have to buy one to reach the nearest city unless absolutely necessary. Seems like it would be in this case.
