Best place in Europe if looking...

...to avoid grey skies i.e. freezing, blue-skied winters paired with comfortably warm summers are perfect, but not regular dull days to bring on S.A.D? (Would love Germany, but avoiding for that reason.)
...for a safe place where kids can play out on their own and it's the norm to 'call on' their friends and neighbours (a good sense of community paired with safety)? (Anywhere with co-housing options definitely of interest.)
...a reasonable lifestyle in terms of salary against cost-of-living?
... for a multicultural society where an ethnically-mixed family won't be made to feel like circus freaks?
...for decent food?
...for green space?

Perhaps a rather tall order but gotta start somewhere...

Re: Lack of resources

I've actually been working over the last several years to ensure my resources are all online. I create Google Sites and use Google Drive religiously as well as getting extra storage from sites like Mega & Dropbox. As long as you can print, copy or display (via projector) you can find out your courses and get ready. In this day and age, it shouldn't be a massive issue methinks.

Also:
-laminated paper makes a great alternative to mini whiteboards
-keeping folders for resuable cut-ups saves time & hassle the next year
-keeping paper that's only been used on one side can be used for either of the above, or for printing on the blank side
-using current media materials can greatly cut costs / reliance on textbooks and other non-authentic materials

Re: Information To Research

Decide where you're interested in and then ask questions related to those places.

Anyone teaching IMYC?

If so, would you be willing to get in touch privately so I can pick your brains?

Thanks.

Re: Applying to GEMS? How?

A friend of mine just had his job with them fall through at the last minute. I'd give them a WIDE berth unless you are 100% sure the school you are applying to is top tier.

Re: Changes for a non-native English ESL teacher

My sister-in-law is not a native English speaker and works for a university in Abu Dhabi. Previously, she worked in Qatar. I can't speak for international schools - only language schools and unis.

Re: Changes for a non-native English ESL teacher

I doubt she'd be so limited as to not find a position. The British Council employs non-native speakers, as do many unis (including ME) so I'd say that information is totally incorrect.

Re: Speech Pathologist positions

If you'll consider changing location, there will be high demand all over Asia.

Re: ISKL?

That's very interesting and I can see why that stagnation might occur. How long ago was this?

Re: Speech Pathologist positions

If you're happy to set up on your own, I can say that - at least in Malaysia - you'd likely be in high demand. You can't start a company here without a local partner, but there are ways to sort this out. We pay a fortune for our son's speech therapist and it's almost impossible to get an appointment as she's so busy. This is just one example, but my point is that perhaps you don't need to be attached to an individual school.

Re: ISKL?

Thanks xtralight. Any expansion on what you didn't like? Please PM if that makes you feel more comfortable but I'd really like a 360 view. How long ago were you there and how long did you stay? Could staffing have changed to mitigate these problems since you left?

Your advice and insight much appreciated.

Re: EdD via distance learning

Thanks fine dude.

After much research, I've narrowed down the options to Capella (US) and USQ (Oz) in case anyone else is looking. Uni of South Africa is super-cheap if looking for a PhD (which I'm not) and apparently it's well-respected.
