Re: Why Don't Schools Contact...

I have been at 2 international schools in 8 years.

I have been told that my references are good. My resume is solid.

I have had my past school heads offer me jobs to come back to their schools to teach.

I have had past school heads pitch for me at job fairs.

I do not have any ego problem and I am only looking for a job at a good school, definitely not a top school.

I ACTIVELY pursued interviews at both job fairs and came up with nothing.

Re: Why Don't Schools Contact...

That doesn't make sense.

At both job fairs my past school heads all told me to make sure I use them as references. They even spoke to a few other heads on my behalf.

And are you trying to say that going to Boston rather than Bangkok would be a warning sign to so many schools?

Man, if there are so many insidious obstacles and foolish variables involved in getting a job overseas, why bother?

And what is a list 99?

Re: Why Don't Schools Contact...

Thanks to all for your help.

Let me bring this back to my original post: Why, then, do you think, at the last 2 Cambridge job fairs (2014 and 2015), when I was very actively trying to get interviews, I got a total of one from a school in Kuwait? I went to 30 plus schools at each fair and they said sorry, we won't even interview you.

The thing is that I never have trouble getting a job here in the U.S. I had 3 job offers a week after I returned home from my last overseas post.

Thanks again.

Re: Why Don't Schools Contact...

Thanks to all for your posts.

1. I have spoken with my Search associate and have been assured that my references are fine.

2. I DO NOT want to go to one of those elite Top Tier schools. I am looking for a good school in a good place.

3. I have had friends at schools pass on my resume to their school heads and I still have not gotten many responses. The heads tell them that they are looking for couples.

4. I have never had any criminal or misconduct charges.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.

Why Don't Schools Contact...

I have a question:

I am still listed as actively looking for an international job - 8 years overseas, IB HL and SL Math, Tok - and only 1 or 2 schools that are listed on Search as needing a math teacher have contacted me. I know, they don't seem like very good schools, but I was thinking that they would be contacting everyone they could this late in the year.

The reason I don't contact the schools is that, while listed as actively looking for a job, I am only 1% into it and am now leaving it all to pure chance.

This is mainly a "for informational purposes only" type of question.

Re: Drinking water in Malaysia

I - and everyone I knew in KL - always used water from the faucet to brush and rinse our teeth. Bottled water not necessary.

Relax. Malaysia isn't China and KL is First rate all the way in terms of health and cleanliness.

You'll never want to leave.

Can you PM me and tell me what school you are going to? let me know if you have other questions.

Re: Drinking water in Malaysia

I left KL in 2012 and I know that you can shower, bathe, cook, etc. without any problem. Buy the big bottles and cooler stand for drinking water.

Note: Something I did not consider but found out when I got to KL is that a lot of apartments/condos do not have hot water in the kitchen. Bathrooms have water heaters. So ask your real estate person.

Enjoy. You are going to one of the most livable countries in the world!

Malaysia EPF and Taxes

Can anyone who REALLY KNOWS tell me how they reported their Malaysian EPF funds on their U.S. taxes?

Even though the money never pushes the salary above the $80,000 U.S. salary exemption, does it need to be reported?

Is it taxed?

Any advice would be great.

Re: Schools Still Searching

Sorry, Guys, I'm just going by what the profile lists for savings potential AND from my own experiences traveling to a lot of these countries and from expat sites AND the pay site on ISR.

And China is off limits now due to pollution and human rights. If I want to work in a country that is trying to rule the world I'll just stay in the U.S.

Thanks for all the help, as always.

Schools Still Searching

I am looking at the remaining math jobs on the Search database and I can't believe people would work at most of these schools.

One school wants an IB math/physics teacher who can teach another subject - and they want to pay less than 38.00 USD TAXED!!

I see that with 109 of these positions still open it is obvious that there are far too many fifth rate schools in this business.

Shame on Magagna and Search for advertising them. I can't wait for the job fairs to finally die.

Yes, Psyguy, I know you say they won't. So there now is no need for you to reply, ok?

Re: Cambridge Diary 2015

@Psyguy

There is nothing wrong with me. Your assumption is pretty insulting.

Maybe you should think about your comments and perceptions before you comment on senator's or shadowjack's or...

Do me a favor and please don't reply to any of my posts unless you can be constructive and have something important to say.

Re: Cambridge Diary 2015

I have to defend senator. Even though he is abrasive and his comments go a bit far, I appreciate it that he points out the negatives of the IT world and I agree with many of these.

I actually find him less abrasive than others on this site - many of whom have just grouped together to criticize him.

I just finished the Cambridge fair and received - again - no interviews, though I have 8 years of IB Math HL an SL, MYP, TOK experience at schools in Asia and, according to my Search associate, my references are fine.

So, I am just starting to see things from the other side of the fence and can appreciate senator's views a bit more now than I did a year ago - though he could be less confrontational.
