American School of Recife, Brazil?

This school has contacted me for a Skype interview prior to the AASSA fair. There are no reviews on the school on ISR or elsewhere on the internet that I can find.

Anyone have insight on the school and/or the city?

thanks!

Inmortus, I am now able to see what positions are posted and it looks like 9 ICT (Information Computer Technology, right?) are posted for the AASSA fair. I have no idea how still the competition is in your area, but that seems like a healthy number of jobs to be worth going for it!

Maybe I will see you there..and good luck!

Shadowjack -thanks for the insight and advice. I am a paid ISR member and have been researching every school going to AASSA, I have a spreadsheet where I am gathering my info so I can make a quick decision if need be at the fair.

I am open to almost anywhere when it comes to this region of the world :-)

Inmortus -i don't know if they will send me lists of positions posted by school once I am accepted, but I am happy to pass on anything for ICT to you. Seems like schools are just starting to post on their own websites for next year, so don't give up hope yet! I really want to find a job in Mexico, Latin/South America...so even if there are few positions, I feel like making the contacts at this fair with directors is worth it. But that is a very personal choice.

Thanks for the advice. I am active now sending out my CV, etc to posted positions at schools attending AASSA.

Anyone else on the forum going this year?

I am completing my statement for the application tonight and they have indicated when I submit it, they will accept me into the fair.

After I am accepted they'll send me info to get a hotel reservation, but I am curious to hear from anyone going if they also offer more info about the schools and positions once you are accepted?

Is AASSA like ISS or Search in that the fair rep helps you through the process and advises you about schools that may be a good match?

My fact sheets from UNI fair 2010 says JFK pay range is: $17,000-$21,708 with housing provided and medical/life insurance. No shipping allowance, they have a small percentage of foreign hires. And for those, they hire single teachers with no dependents They state teachers can save 20% of salary.

I have heard it is a lovely place to live and a nice school from a friend who worked there for 10 years (local) but foreign hires don't tend to stay long because of the low pay.

hope this helps

Thank-you all, for the helpful ideas. I will start research on the dog regulations on each country I am researching schools within. Attending AASSA fair in early Dec, as my first regional choice is Latin/South America or Mexico. My dog and I spent last summer in Mexico and as he is long-legged, he flew cargo and it was easy-peasy. He's a good traveler.

I have been thinking about places where the local culture is at least dog-friendly and it's safe enough for us to walk and exercise together.

I really appreciate the info, DCgirl! I am a single school counselor, so maybe your experience of who got an offer bodes well for my chances.

I am coming from the west coast, so it's not so cheap for me to attend, but I am most interested in South/Latin America and it's early, as you say...so I hope to learn a lot and make contacts that may serve later on. This is my very first fair, so other than what I have read here, I am not sure what to expect.

So far, i see three positions posted for counselors in the group attending the fair this year and I plan to contact them ahead. Do you think this is a good idea?

Thanks, DCgirl.

Can you give me any general advice or impressions of this fair? Did you end up getting a job offer there?

Do I mention my dog during interviews at a job fair?

Or in any other part of the application process at schools not attending the fair?

My sole dependent is a 18-lb well trained mutt (he has traveled internationally with me before, although not for jobs). I wouldn't consider leaving him behind any more than someone else would a human child, so that route isn't a option I am considering.

Applying for school counselor jobs starting now and attending AASSA fair in early December. Should I mention my dog? When in the process and how?

I HAVE read the blog & comments here on ISR on Going Abroad With Pets. Looking for more, and recent advice.

Thanks for any insight & direct experience.

Anyone going to the AASSA fair in Atlanta?

It's my first job fair! Any advice on this particular one from folks who have gone previous years?

Are there usually evening receptions or events in addition to the daytime school presentations, sign-up segment and interviews? My sister live a few hours from Atlanta and may drive up for the weekend to support me. Trying to figure out if I will have evening time to spend with her.

Thanks

Vette~

Thank-you! Would you mind sharing if you are also a college counselor, what country you are in and perhaps what your experiences have been in other countries you have worked?

When I look at the websites of many schools in Latin & South America, the counselor position is a local person...though I wonder if the size of the school makes a difference. Smaller schools may have only one person doing college and personal/social counseling.

Thanks again for your reply.

Would you say this is true for college counselor positions as well? I am qualified and experienced in all domains of ASCA's model for comprehensive school counseling: College/Career, Personal/Social and Academic Support.

Anyone working as a school counselor currently, I would love to hear your thoughts!

thanks :)

Do School Counselors need fluency in local language?

Specifically for Mexico, Latin America, South America. I am serious about landing a high school or middle school school counseling position for 2014-15 and wonder what my chances are without professional level fluency? Can anyone working in these countries testify to what their schools look for in hiring school counselors? I know many schools are "international" of "American", but the students & families are largely nationals.

I have studied/practiced Spanish and lived for up to 2 months several times in Mexico during my summer breaks, but my level is intermediate. Based on my past study experiences, I know I would progress quickly in immersion, working regularly with a teacher.

I have a Masters degree, state license, admin & teaching experience and am now in my 3rd year both post-grad school and working at a top private school (with a day & boarding program) as a high school level counselor. Single, late 30's and have a dog.

My dream would be to get a job in Mexico, but I am open to all Spanish speaking countries and will be attending AASSA this year.

Thanks!

Topic: How importance is appearance in getting hired?

Appearance DOES matter in hiring

While I don't believe (or maybe don't want to) that weight and physical attractiveness would be a deal-breaker for any candidate with a great CV, experience and references, that may indeed be the case more often than not. It is unrealistic to think that appearance is not a factor and research certainly supports this is even a greater factor for women than men. A recent study revealed that women deemed "too attractive" also had a harder time securing employment in some fields.

We humans are visual creatures and often make judgements & assumptions quickly based on what is before us. Principals are looking for quality people that they feel some rapport with and can see fitting into the faculty community.

That said, an up-to-date polished appearance, self-confidence and a genuine smile makes everyone more attractive. You may want to consider some professional coaching or counseling to boost your self-confidence and help you feel more prepared to show your best self. Change the things you can and most important, learn to accept and love the things you cannot change.

Seemingly small things like whitening your teeth and getting a stylish haircut & color that really flatters you undoubtedly will make you feel better, which will translate to the person interviewing you.

Best wishes!
