I would think Pakistan to be on the dangerous side.

Good guide, although I disagree with the most schools require 2 years experience. Unless you talking about top tier schools ok maybe, but there are many schools that hire new 1st year teachers.

I just returned back to the states to complete my final assignment of TeacherReady.

So, for renewals and such I should try to get a NJ license using my Fla license so it would be permanent?

What kind of search did you do when looking for jobs? Why did you go to Pakistan? Did you have any other options?

Was trying to go to Vietnam but considering China as well. Wondering what a newb teacher should aim for.

Yea, I am def gonna apply to every IS in Vietnam. I hope I can get hired at one but if not I am prepared to chill and teach ESL for 6 months part time while I wait for the next school year to start.

As of now, my plan is

1) Apply this winter/spring/summer for Fall 16 IS in Vietnam.

2) If I dont secure any IS school position for Fall 16 arrive in HCMC next Dec / Jan and simply hangout till August doing a little ESL work on the side part time. Then head off to what ever IS school position I got in the world come August.

This is not a move for work, atleast not primarily. So simply going to China I am not sure is an option. Like I said, if it comes down to it I will just take a 6-12 month gap year in Vietnam. From talking to people living in Vietnam, I am pretty confident I can find some ESL work to hold me over at the very least.

ISR should seriously put a sticky on the front page titled "Am I employable / What are my chances.." etc etc

When it comes to international schools, things vary a lot. You have low tier schools in places that might hire people without even a teaching license.

Generally speaking though, the main requirement is holding a teaching license. You can be fairly assured you can get a job somewhere in the world with one so long as you are not picky about location and quality of school.

For the better schools and locations it is gonna be tougher. You will most likely need decent experience (preferably IB or what ever curriculum the school uses), good references, and knowing people at the schools always helps increase your chances. Simple luck and timing often also play an important role in getting hired. There is no set in stone procedure and outcome for these type questions. Anything can or wont happen.

OP, just make a list of all the schools you would work at and ranked them. Apply to them and take the best offer you get.

From what I can tell, I should be able to get some job. As for lifestyle, not expecting much. Something decent and simple will do. Which doesnt seem hard if one can make 1,000-1,500 dollars a month working some ESL gigs. Worst case anyways.

I think I should be alright either way.

Thanks man, I never considered the substitute teaching thing. Yea I know ESL does nothing for me, hence only will do it for one more year. Just want to live in Vietnam for a year, anyway anyhow. After that I will move on to a real school if I didnt get one in Vietnam.

Yea, I am very aware teaching ESL does me no favors. But, I am willing to sacrifice 1 year doing it if it allows me to live in Vietnam for a year. I have a personal reason for wanting to go to Vietnam. The other Asian countries wont suffice.

I have zero desire to live in the USA right now. Pretty much been traveling since I graduated University in 2009.

After a year in Vietnam i'll certainly move to a country like China or Middle East where I can get hired at an International School without much experience (assuming I cant find one in Vietnam next Fall).

At the moment though just wanting to get advice about Vietnam.

Yea, your right. But gonna have to work with what I got. I am prepared to teach English the first year and see if I can get something the second go around. If not I will probably leave after 1 year.

I think I am gonna move to Vietnam next Summer or Fall. I will have a middle grades math teaching license with no experience.

I will apply this Winter and Spring for jobs in Vietnam, hopefully something will turn up. If not I guess I will just have to land in the country and look for some English teaching gigs to hold me over.

If anyone has any advice about working in Vietnam it would be much appreciated.

I wouldnt listen to all the people that say dont do it if you dont love it.

Teaching is a job. You are gonna have to lesson plan, teach, grade etc. Very few people in this world actually love to wake up and go to work.

Your personal / social / family life will be much more important and reflect on overall happiness than whether you teach x or y.

So long as the work is not very stressful or time consuming you should be able to get by just fine whether you love x subject or not. (it helps if you love it no doubt)

My vote is for the high level math or science, then get two years experience in your home country.

What exactly is NES?
