Obviously it is best to have a degree in your field / licensed subjects.

Not the end of the world though and you can certainly get hired without it.

Most important thing above all is experience.

They need to be certified (generally)

Years prior to certification do not count (generally)

There are cheap fast alternative certification programs online

is that mandatory?

and he will surely get discriminated against.

korea is one of the most zenophobic societies in the world.

You make around 35k in many places correct? Not sure how the ME gets away with offing 35k when someone can go to Korea or elsewhere in the world for the same salary.

You need to get certified plain and simple. Husband also for that matter.

Or look for other job opportunities / professions in your home country.

Pretty well, especially at the contractor company schools. Not Aramco money but consistent with ME schools, and benefits. $50K+USD, no taxes, flights, execpat housing and insurance, tuition waivers, access to private car service and security.

As you recognize though, you have to go for the money.
I thought ME money for new teacher was around around 35k?

What can I expect to make if I head to the ME for my first contract?

I'll be on the first plane if I can make 50K+ and do tutoring on the side. Would save everything as I would like like a popper and hermit ie no trips etc.
Thank you, do I absolutely need the 2 years experience? I do want to go to China and I am flexible about location. I am also willing to take a 2nd or 3rd tier until I get experience for a first tier.
We should put a sticky on the top of the forum. This question gets asked every week.

No, 2 yrs experience is not absolutely needed.

You need 6 hours of Academic coursework, 30 hours of PD (inservice) is equal to 3 course hours. You can't get those because there aren't really any providers outside Florida that are approved. You might be able to use IB workshops, since the Florida IBO Association is an approved provider in Florida. Otherwise NB certification will work, but its more work then the course hours. You could also return to Florida and simply retake your original certification exams for course hours.

The answer to your question though is yes your going to need to start planing on taking coursework to renew your certificate in 5 years. They do accept CLEP coursework though and you can take CLEP courses in a lot of centers around the world, you just need to be admitted to a college that accepts a lot of CLEP courses so that you can have the, put on a transcript.

Florida isn't that friendly since you need to complete separate PD for EACH certification/endorsement area you renew.
So the easiest thing to do is just return to the US and re-take the certification exams?

If that is all I need to do then no biggie.

Havent even thought about the certification guidelines like renewal etc.

I am getting mine out of Florida.

Can someone help me make sense of this?

http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/renew.asp

So I will not be working in Florida and I will have to take University classes to renew after 5 years?

Your TA experience means little.

Just focus on your background in science and go from there.

Re: Advice for a future Teacher.
Hi, I am a second career teacher just starting a teacher certification program
I was a grad student in chemistry. I had to leave the program with a Masters.

As a T.A. i realized that I love teaching.

I'm currently pursing a certification in sec. chemistry and math.

Any advice for how to get myself ready for a career in teaching internationally?

I'm also an American nationally.
Living abroad isnt for everyone.

About the only thing you can do to "get ready" is 1) travel and 2) read up about different countries and cultures you are interested in.

Good luck.

If you only plan to teach abroad you dont need to go back to Canada and spend the extra time and money. Do an alternative US certification program which will be ALOT cheaper and quicker. You will just need to apply for a US social security number.

You might even be able to use that in Canada if you decide to return by taking an exam or two.

I would imagine it will be difficult to get a job if you havent finished your certification or atleast passed the certification exams prior to finishing your program.

I wouldnt not mention your partner. In the schools eyes she would just be an expense / dependent imo

Im pretty sure teaching at a Uni / Comm College will not count, as it is experience AFTER certification in the International School setting and curriculum .

And FYI, 2 years is not a REQUIREMENT in a sense that you must have it or cant get a job without it. It is a starting point that schools PREFER. Sure some elite tier 1 schools might follow that guideline to a tee, but there are plenty schools which have and do hire newb teachers.
