Re: Schools in China and Taxes

Taxes in Beijing range fromm low 20's to high teens unless it is paid by the school. Things like rent are not taxed. School tuition for students is also not taxes like it is in Europe. China is a good deal right now if you can pay to filter the air in your apartment and the school is filtered.

Re: 8 Years IB MAth HL and SL No interviews?!

If you are a search member, talk to your associate. They can review your references and tell you if that might be your sticking point. It is in their interest for you to get hired. I have seen some very horrible math teachers keep their jobs because there simply was no one else to sit in that chair. It is not easy for many schools to fill those positions! If you are open, there is surely a job out there! Also think about using a recruiter, there are a few good ones out there!

Re: salary for china

It is fun to read what people like psyguy (did he ever live in China?) say about the cost. He is off. Seriously 2k a month, what a life that must have been.

2 years ago I made almost 17k a month, I easily saved 1000 USD a month with a trailing spouse, weekly . (it helps I won more than I lost), trips for christmas and summer, and really having no budget.

I am going back to make almost 30k a month and expect that we should save 20k USD minimum in the first year (as it gets cheaper the longer you live in a place we expect more after that). I took the job so we could buy another house (I didn't love Beijing the first time, I need a reason to go back) after 3-4 years we should be able to have a pretty nice place (omit location...)

46k for a family will save a ton! Friends with a family of 5 making about 30k saved 15-20k usd a year.

Re: American International School of Guangzhou

I cannot say from a parent perspective, most people posting here would not be able to. I do know that most hires come through the Bangkok Search fair, which attracts the top international candidates in Asia. I know one of the principals and she is very selective about the type of people she hires. It is known as a good school, and as a teacher, I would be happy to send my kids there.

Re: Partying??? Beware of this scam...

Try saying no. It often goes over pretty badly. It is almost better to leave, or pay cash and be sure the barkeep understands, ONLY ONE. SE Asia, you learn quickly!

I personally thought they were some of the coolest admin I met at the Bangkok fairs. The school looks fun and challenging to work.

Re: How much math does a high school math teacher need?

The last 2 comments are applicable to all of the sciences as well, and I would assume other courses as well. You must understand not only what the students are currently engaged in, but where this information is going to take them. The changes in the Group 4 syllabus are allowing this to take place easier for students who are ready for that. Math will be changing syllabus soon, and one can expect similar types of changes as one sees in the sciences.

Re: Student Loan Payments

Arrest you at the border... Hahahahahaha

With the number of defaults and the amount of times debt is sold it is guaranteed the financial sector has no idea which way is up. Then try to communicate with the redtape and buracracy of the government let alone homeland security... I can't stop laughing. I am glad I saw that this morning, I have a lot of grading and was a bit bummed, I will go into it whistling....

Still laughing

Re: Cheapest Way to ship from Cairo to Shanghai

There are many different ways to ship (air and sea options). A good company is paramount. Also having a detailed packing list (which the company should provide).

Ultimately you need someone who can do everything for you and this provide several options. I do not know who that is in Egypt but I will tell you how I have found them before. (The company I am using came by today to provide my solution).

I was lucky this time as I had a friend of my wife who happened to be moving back to Britain and when I called them they can do my move as well. So unless you know other teachers making big moves, I would scour your expat forums, or hit up google until you can find what you need. The forums worked for me in the past, much like this one...

Good luck.

Re: Best/Easiest/Cheapest country to buy a vacation condo?

You can lease land and own the house in the Philippines. You can actually own a condo there as a foreigner. You can buy a small one for 60k USD. Be careful though, make sure the building is complete tons of these things go bankrupt.

Try renting an apartment through airbnb.com the next time you travel. It might be a better way to rent your pad out anyway...

Good luck

Re: India Provident Fund

No foreign hire even thinks about the Provident fund. They have effectively made it uncollectable, unless you really have A lot invested (teaching couple with higher salary and 5 years etc.)

I put my Stonehill comments on here in another post. I do not work there, only have met a few people. They had a HUGE house cleaning this year. They will hire 25+ new teachers. Head of School has been mentioned to me as being respected by other HOS's. Salary has gone down. School used to be more "blond", but is opened up to admitting more local students. Huge recruiting budget this year (they went to A Lot of fairs!).

Biggest issue is being able to live in Bangalore. It is a city which used to be full of parks (it still has many), but is now UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Driving is horrible, but definitely is a mirror of how people act. It is not uncommon to be standing in line buying 2-3 items and have a man shove his way in front because he has 1 thing. If you call them out, they tend to run away embarrassed, but most people just accept it, it is possibly a caste thing, or a stay out of the way avoiding issues thing. Transfering money has to be done by the school, do not try to convert and carry it out, as you are restricted on how much you can convert. The red tape is endless, and you never know exactly what it is you need. Need a background check, go through 47 hoops, but there is no place to find out what those hoops are. If you do find out, it is almost guaranteed they will have changed by the time you get there. India is FRUSTRATION! India is DIRTY! India is many, many things, most are not fun or interesting. See a few temples, you are over it, see enough homeless dirty people with no shoes, you become immune to it, almost get hit by buses, cars, motorcycles, you just start to say you hate it. India is a place where most people who make it here find something that allows them to escape. I can see no reason to ever go back.

Re: India Provident Fund

You cannot collect it until you are 60, you have to keep an open account in India in order to collect. These were 2 things explained to me. Basically, not the same as Malaysia.

Re: Perceptions of HR/principals on Unorthodox Credentials

Your license is in chem, you have a PHd. Your only issue seems to be that it has been a while since you have been in a classroom, and that you are not conversant on any of the 3 big syllabus.

Personally I often wonder what the heck do we actually remember from our undergrad days? Not a ton! Everyone knows this, so your PHd speaks loudest. It might not get you into one of the world colleges right off the bat (example only), but plenty of schools would talk to you. Find a decent one with IB, get some experience and have a nice career. Good luck!

Re: Amman Baccalaureate School and Stonehill in Bangalore, I

Stonehill is in Bangalore India. There is A LOT to be said for the location factor. Their IB DP program is small. Other things have been written lately on this board.
