Wife and I went to their presentation at one of the fairs, and we we very impressed. They didn't get into a lot about the life there, other than briefly saying that crime is a problem. The school and their service programs look great. The Director was rude and condescending, though. We turned down an interview because of his attitude.

Jbiersteker- totally unrelated. I noticed you are bringing hockey equipment. If you are living in the Seoul area, look up CBHK (Canadian Ball Hockey Korea). I played with them while I lived there, and they are a great group of guys and girls. Many of them play on the ice hockey teams too.

In general, I haven't seen salaries like the one previously posted. Depending on experience they seem to be n the range of 30-40,000 unless your working in Admin or taking on other roles.
Classroom/behaviour management is a big issue in Kuwait. I have talked with teachers who have taught here in Kuwait and elsewhere in the ME, and they usually agree that Kuwaitis tend to behave the worst. Having said that, I have learned a lot of great techniques for classroom management since I have been here.

This seems to be a heated topic at times.Personal opinions abound. I'm not sure why Durian wouldn't include IS Manila, Jakarta, or Taipei, but would include Shanghai American School and Discovery. Again, personal opinions as My dealings with Shanghai American School left a bad taste in my mouth and I couldn't be happier that my wife and I are going to one of the schools left off his list. Everything about our new school screams excellence.

One more thing : don't take the overnight sleeper busses. Awful ride. We took one from Udaipur to Jaisalmer. Two of us in one "bunk" (our choice - a double bunk) that was about 1.5 feet high with a window that wouldn't shut. I couldn't sleep the ride was so bumpy and I was scared my leg was going to slip through the window and I'd wake up missing a piece.

I rode first class once when I was there, and the rest of the time we were in second class sleeper. The only major difference was the AC. Second class just had a window...which meant we were filthy whenever we woke up from a night's sleep.
We booked some of our rides up to a week and a half in advance, but that was it. We were roughing it though, so comfort wasn't always a driving factor. We had to sleep on the train station floor one night in order to get the right train. And then we overslept our stop and ended up in Udaipur.
You kind of have to go with the flow there
I'm not sure about the quota your talking about, but they never looked too long at my passport.

I don't know about allowing access to banks back home, but I know that HSBC works as a separate bank. The ones in Canada aren't connected for ease to to the ones in Korea. I looked into opening an HSBC account prior to moving to Korea in 2008, and they told me that I would essentially be opening a separate account in both countries.
As far as sending money from Korea to Canada. - KEB (Korea Exchange Bank) is the best. They have an online system that works very well.
Keep in mind - my information is a few years old, but I have friends that still live there.

I can't speak for them, but I know that my wife and I had one interview and a quick chat with HR before being offered contracts. We were at a fair, though. Since you aren't at a fair, they may be weighing all of their options. I know they did some hiring at the Dubai fair too, so maybe they are waiting on other candidates.

I've talked to one person and she gave a good account . She went in knowing what she wanted and where she wanted to go, and she came away with a post she's pumped for. Very low key from what she says.
Not exactly first hand information coming from me, so apologies there. My wife and I would have gone to this fair if we hadn't been so fortunate in London.

I know some people going, so I can give some info when I talk to them after the fair. From what I have been told by an admin, it isn't a great fair unless you want to work a a 2nd or 3rd tier (as he said) ME school. He told me that the big schools over here have usually already done the bulk of their hires. Just what I've heard.

We only shop at Sultan Center and Carrefour and we spend what I said above. Sultan Center is definitely pricey, but that's due to the range of imported stuff they get. I find Carrefour actually has pretty good deals when we go. I once bought about 4 pounds of coffee for 2KD.
The fruit and vegetable stand near our apartment is convenient, but they charge more than both Sultan and Carrefour.
