Marieh- Question For You (FTCE Math 9-12 Exam)

Noticed you took the FTCE Math 9-12 exam. Was wondering if you could break it down for me. I am gonna take it when I visit the US next Fall or Winter.

What study materials do you recommend?

What are some key things to focus on when preparing?

How would you describe the test?

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

Well, to me they are almost one in the same. Or at least go hand in hand lol. ie The district is influenced by the politicians, the principals are influenced by the district, and the teachers are influenced by the principals. etc

One big cluster f*ck of worrying about PC, appearance, and feelings when they all should be worried about the classroom and actual students that want to learn.

Re: Undergraduate degree different than cert and experience

As always,

it's optimal to have a related degree just like it's optimal to have experience.

Neither is a set in stone criteria / requirement.

Just use all job search resources and be flexible / open about location and school and that gives you the best chance you got.

Which id wager gives you a solid shot of landing a job.

Re: Your opinions of classroom mgmt & discipline in IS's

Psy,

You are looking at it through a teachers or parents point of view. Which is the correct view btw. Much better to not waste resources on idiotic kids. However, the school board wants a fairy tale utopia ie solve your discipline problems (get better classroom management) and improve your test scores every year.

Re: Your opinions of classroom mgmt & discipline in IS's

@Psy

Regarding ISS, I agree, but the thing is schools do not want to expel or suspend students because it looks very bad on review. The district wants the kids in school with a chance to learn than at home doing nothing or getting into trouble. In which case ISS serves an important compromise. You can get those kids out of the main classroom, while also keeping them in school.

Yea, you are looking at the parents from a wrong angle with regards to the US. Most these kids come from broken single mother homes. Very little parental guidance or supervision.

yea, thousands.

lol 300k would be tough which would be a lot of kimbab and ramen, but 500k not so much. enough for a 6k soup for lunch and a cooked meat and veg for dinner.

@marieh

Did you take the middle school math exam or the high school math exam? If you took the high school math exam, could you break down the test for me? I am studying now to take the test. Any info, insight, recommendations, opinions etc would be much appreciated.

Re: Seoul, Korea

Not sure id say COL in Korea is high. Apartments, food, medical visits, and transportation is or can be very cheap. If someone wanted to they could live off 300-500 won a month assuming housing was provided. The only things id classify as expensive in Korea are Western style restaurants, imported food, and having a new smart phone (which is the same as USA cost) which are all optional.

Re: Teacher Attributes

What a joke. I have heard of that in ESL Language Schools but not in professional teaching.

You might want to start putting together a contingency plan.

Re: Acceptance of Teacher Ready/Teach Now certification?

It was great. I can not envision a more convenient, affordable, and flexible program. It is a 9th month program that has taken me nearly 3 years to finish due to procrastination, issues finding a school near me, moving to different countries, teachers leaving, etc. etc. They worked with me the whole time. Can't speak enough good things about TR and the people running it.

Re: Acceptance of Teacher Ready/Teach Now certification?

TR gives you a state of florida's professional teaching license. Same one college education majors get. I just finished my last day student teaching with TR yesterday actually.

Re: Your opinions of classroom mgmt & discipline in IS's

@PsyG

Ultimately yes, one needs expulsion. Should be like after a set number of ISS's or for very severe one time offenses. However, even if you do not expel the student, atleast get him out of the teacher's classroom and into ISS aka a holding den lol. No one cares if they are loud and off task in ISS. Teachers just tell them the assignment and if they do it great, if not, oh well. Then, at least the teacher can actual focus on teaching and the kids that want to learn can learn in a conducive environment.

I think you are giving a little too much credit to the parents to think expulsion will force them to be responsible etc. I imagine they would just leave the kid at home alone or to his own devices and not really bother with it or care. In these house holds education, discipline, etc do not appear to be priorities. But yes, I imagine some would force some parents to take some action.

When did schools start catering to bad students, politics, and other BS? In no way should it be an issue or looked down on teachers or admin for disciplining (to what ever extent is needed) bad kids.

That was an absurd statement from Senator. Classroom management (or lets just say dealing/coping with extremely disrespectful unmotivated kids) is only a part of being a teacher.

I am not sure we disagree here. Sounds like you actually agree with me.

Hell, I think schools are not comfortable with hardly any of the major discipline actions. Due to politics, regulations, and image. If a school and teacher have tried everything they know to do and the kid is still causing a big problem then it should be perfectly ok to have that kid in ISS for however many days and also suspend or expel him if things reach a breaking point. You are right about school and privilege.

I am surprised some parents have not got together to sue these schools for allowing the classrooms to turn into zoos. Seems to me there is some nice money to be made with that.
