Re: Antwerp

One of the best pubs ever is in Antwerp...Kulminator...vintage beers! I had a 1983 Chimay when I was there last! If you or your husband is into beer, then Antwerp would be awesome! Nice campus. Quiet with lots of trees. Excellent access by train to everything in Europe

Re: DUI

DUIs generally do not go on your criminal record...only driving record.,.and schools only ask for criminal. At least that is my experience.

If they ask, lie...never works out well telling the truth in this situation. You have already been punished for your lack of good judgement.

Re: Not-for Profit Schools in SE Asia

Saigon South is owned by a company which runs the school as a "non-profit". I would not consider this totally non-profit. The board is made up of 2...yes, 2 people that work for the company. Lots of gray area here when it comes to "non-profit"

Re: PE Teaching Advice

Yeah...Why do you need advice?! As long as your references check out, you seem like an excellent candidate for one of the big Asian schools. You have excellent experience and you are young and most likely energetic...exactly what many schools want in Asia. If you are in Search, then Bangkok is the fair for you...that is a no brainer except you are single. BKK tends to be a couples and IB fair but you have the IB and AD experience. Don't know about the Aussie fair. I would think that you might be able to secure a good job through SKYPE..previous to fairs...BUT your references must be bullet proof.

Re: Dengue mosquito

PG...can you copy and paste anywhere, anyhow, anyway...ANY other articles, studies, anecdotal evidence that it's ok to use DDT on the skin for mosquitos, flies, bed bugs etc. etc. etc.?

I have come to the conclusion that you enjoy pulling people's chains or psycho. There is no way that anyone is putting homemade DDT cream on their body. No way...prove it!

Re: Dengue mosquito

Oh...and DEET does not kill mosquitos...it repels them.

Re: Dengue mosquito

I think the original question was how an individual can prepare for living in dengue zones...What can I do to limit the chance of contracting dengue?

DDT? Well, yes, it has been used to control or eliminate malaria...by spraying the inside walls of buildings. They did not spray people down...and I can't imagine anyone whipping up their own DDT mosquito cream. Are you kidding me? Google DDT insect repellent cream and see what you get...lol

DDT is used by countries, cities, villages etc. etc. NOT by individuals as mosquito repellent. It was once an ingredient in a product called RID for mosquito repellent, but it was discontinued when the toxicity of DDT was discovered.

I would not make a steady diet of 100% DEET either BUT using 30-50% deet spray or lotion is what you need. I do use "jungle juice" or Ben's sometimes (100% DEET) but like I said...a little bit goes a long way. A few drops behind the ears, neck, ankles, wrists and proper clothing is the ticket. DEET can be applied to clothing too..avoiding skin contact.

Re: Dengue mosquito

Psyguy? DDT? are you serious? Do you know why the Bald Eagle is no longer endangered...because of conservation and the discontinuation of the use of DDT...a known cancer causer. It's ok though...I know no one could get that if they wanted to.

Re: Dengue mosquito

I would not use DDT on myself and I'm not sure that is actually available...What you want is DEET!! A little bit goes a long way.

You need to watch when you are sitting outside in the evening...perhaps dining at an outside cafe. Mosquitos will lurk underneath the table and get at your legs. Always keep your bottle of repellent handy.

I got Dengue and its not fun. Incredible headache behind the eyes and "bone breaking" pain at times. Picture your worst hangover ever...and that is it for 9 days. Well, that was about 5 days...it kinda tapers off in the last 3 days or so...depending on which one you get but I had the textbook 9 day dengue. The biggest side effect was the semi-depression I got while sick...that lasted a while after.

Every mosquito is a threat!

Re: Iceland

No heating bills there...Iceland has done an incredible job of harnessing the power of geothermal heat. Other expenses make up for it though. Best horse steak money can buy! I would say it would be a remarkable posting...

Re: Wanting to move to Vietnam. Advice?

I wouldn't waste my time asking questions here...sounds like you have made up your mind to go. Don't worry about warnings about deportation. Yes, legally this can happen...but likely won't unless you do something seriously stupid.

Just go...have fun...it's really a fun place to work!!

Re: Wanting to move to Vietnam. Advice?

Check American International School in Saigon. That might be possible. No way you are sneaking into the top ISs, But yea, you can find a teaching job in Saigon. I know plenty of guys teaching in Korean schools without teaching credentials. Where there is a will, there is a way...especially in Saigon. Great city with loads of opportunity. You can definitely show up without a job and find something...just depends on what kind of lifestyle you expect.

Re: Master's Degree Questions (Again)

I don't think WHERE makes a difference. WHAT does...

There are so many po-dunk master's degree programs out there and it doesn't really seem to matter. Yes, if you have Harvard on your CV, that will make a difference but Virginia vs. Old Dominion won't really matter...unless the hiring agent is an alum of either.

If she wants admin job in the future, get the admin degree.

Really, there are so many variables and nothing is impossible no matter what direction you choose...but I would choose the cheaper option and that seems better anyway since it will be in admin.

Re: Next Steps...final year in USA.

sign up for the Iowa fair. Great for 1st timers...and take psyguy's words with a grain of salt. Some of it seems like good advice but don't trust his negative blabber. He will always tell you something is not possible...glass half empty kind of guy.

Just make sure all of your ducks are in a row and go for it. As long as you are organized and present yourself well, you will get a job. Unfortunately, your experience is limited and you will have to take what you can get...but I've seen beginning teachers get their 1st job in some good international schools. Where there is a will, there is a way.
