Re: Attending Fair After Accepting Position

No. Teacher candidates and recruiters are busy interviewing and you will be occupying time that a viable candidate could be using. Waterloo will be cold and dull (super nice locals, though). Enjoy a staycation instead.

question for recruiters/SEN teachers re: IB experience

How important is IB curriculum experience for a teacher in Special Education Needs? Is not having it a deal breaker? I would appreciate as many responses as possible.

You've probably already seen that thread if you've been lurking, but if not it's pretty comprehensive.

Truthfully, there are lots of schools out there and tremendous variety in regards to who will hire whom, how much they will pay, cost of living, etc. You really have to put in the time to research very carefully and choose based on your needs and desires.

You can live off of one salary in most places. The question then becomes how much you want to save, travel, etc. and that depends on you, your status, your age, your debts, etc.

I think your qualifications make you a desirable candidate in many places, even if it's true that there is a high number of candidates in your field. Schools are more reluctant to hire first year teachers than first year international teachers with a number of teaching years under their belts. That said, I did once have a school refuse to interview me because I had not previously taught abroad. It was what most on this forum would consider to be a Tier One school.

Are you planning for 2016-2017 or the following year?

Job postings

Hello,

I've been applying to schools directly on their websites or through Schrole. While a good percentage of South American and Asian schools have jobs posted already, I have noticed that a very small percentage of European schools (Western and Eastern) have jobs posted. Is there a reason for this? Is it common?

another option is to leave students out of the shot but still include the audio.

Re: 5-10 minute demo lesson- Help!

whole class reading or writing mini-lesson, small group reading or writing strategy lesson, individual reading or writing conferences could all be done in ten minutes or less. I would advise using students.

fair or no fair?

Is a SEN/Learning Support position one that would be in demand enough to be hired ahead of a fair for a qualified applicant or is it one of the dime a dozen positions like primary generalist that is typically hired at a fair? Just curious.

Re: is it ok to leave after 2 years?

Did you have a contract for longer than two years? If not, it's a fairly common practice to leave after the initial two years, especially during the early years of international teaching. That said, a longer stay at a school may make you more appealing somewhere down the road.

Re: Etiquette and expectations

I receive a housing allowance for one person. The standard here is that the housing allowance is enough for a two bedroom flat, which is plenty for a couple.

As for your other question, Search requires fees from everyone, residents of the US, Canada, UK included.

Re: Etiquette and expectations

When I was hired for my current position, I did not inform my school that my boyfriend would be joining me. I didn't see the need since I came to a country where he could find work, handle his own visa, etc (and did). It was not an attempt at deception, nor do I think that mentioning him would have been an issue.

early hiring or being hired without fair attendance

In your experience, are certain types of positions more likely to be hired via Skype or before fairs? Or does it just depend on the school?
