The situation for singles has changed a lot in recent years.

The good news is that singles are no longer expected to share a house for the 1st year (before moving onto the housing allowance) and are instead provided with an apartment about 300 metres from the front gate of the school (not a bad commute!).

The bad news is that (a) the apartments are really really small and (b) it is quite possible that this will be the only housing option for a single for the 1st few years of their time at JIS. The only way a single will move onto the housing allowance is if enough new single teachers arrive at JIS to occupy all the apartments that JIS owns.

My source (an extremely good one - 1st hand!) is that the single teachers are very unhappy with the housing they have been provided with.

I would advise you to ask a lot of questions about the apartments if you get to the stage of considering JIS as an option. Ask about the size, ask about the number of apartments JIS owns and how long you may be expected to remain in the apartments.

I used to subscribe to Joyjobs - the thing I liked about it was that it collated all the job vacancies from different sources. This was harder for one person to do a few years ago.

What I found really helpful was the different chapters (available to download as PDF files) on how to get a job in international schools. I found the chapters on the fairs and the interviews really useful.

A friend sent this to me as an Excel file. Take it with a grain of salt, as I am not sure what his source was. I think it was from Dave's ESL Cafe or something like that. I'd be interested to know if someone on this forum is aware of the site it originated on.

Apparently, it was taken from an international school in Vietnam that commissioned a survey of all the international schools in the region. You will notice it uses the terms Case 1,2,3 etc. I think that refers to qualifications - Case 1 for eg, may just be BA without certification.

I agree with the previous post.

Boredom is a huge issue, especially if you are somewhere where the language/culture etc is quite foreign. I had a friend in this position when I worked in China and she found it really hard. She began to hate hanging out with her partner and his school collegues because all the talk was about work.

I am not sure this a deal breaker, but your partner would need to be really independent and have interests (such as doing a course, or a genuine interest in the country you live in).

I've worked in international schools for a few years now and met many teachers who worked in for profit schools in the Middle East. I am yet to hear anyone who had a positive experience. If u wish to work in the Middle East, it is probably safer to choose schools that have a clear majority of students from the expatriate community. For eg, I have friends at the American School of Doha who are happy there.

PS: as a rule, for profit schools anywhere are a pretty risky proposition (IMHO)

Just my 2 cents.

If u don't tell the school on your CV that u have dependents, then they may hire you as a single - this means that none of your dependents would be covered (for health, tickets, immigration, housing, schooling etc).

In recent years, a lot of schools are taking a one dependent per teacher attitude. Even better schools like JIS and the International School Beijing are adopting this policy. This means they'll only sponsor one of your dependents, not three.

Sorry for being a bit negative here; however, my advice would be to send your CV in and just talk about yourself. However, when you talk to the school, give them all the details.

Some schools I know of that did sponsor extra dependents are Beijing BISS International School and I think Shanghai American School.

As for transcripts, the only time I was asked for these was at my present school and that was for them to determine where to place me on the salary scale. The more graduate credits, the higher you are placed on the salary scale. Most are happy with just evidence of your degrees. ISS ask for transcripts. Search and COIS do not (not in my experience anyway).

As for recruitment fairs, more and more schools are recruiting before the fairs. I have already had an interview for next year. Schools are getting paranoid that the better teachers will all be snapped up prior to the fairs, so are being more proactive. Get in touch with any schools that interest you ASAP.
