Re: IASAS

Thanks for the perspectives. Let's throw a wrench in there. Let's say you have 2 little kids and have to include that as part of the consideration, would it change your rankings? I would think Singapore moves up and Manila and Jakarta both move down.

IASAS

Just curious how one would rank the schools in the IASAS conference based on overall package vs. cost of living. Which school would you make out the best at assuming your lifestyle was the same in each city?

International School of Bangkok
International School of Kuala Lumpur
Taipei American School
Jakarta Intercultural School
International School of Manila
Singapore American School

Re: Best Place in Asia with Kids

Thanks for the detailed response! It's definitely helpful. Where would Taiwan rank up there?

Best Place in Asia with Kids

We are going recruiting next year and are eyeing SE Asia or east Asia for our next move. What would be the best places for young kids in the region? (4 and 2)

Re: Timeline

Thanks for the comments. Just to clarify, I have great relationships with both my principal and HOS. I am not worried about informing them that we are leaving or the type of reference they will provide. Just want to get our ducks in a row. Yes, because of the nature of our positions and our experience, in the past, we have tended to get interest, interviews, and offers early in the recruiting cycle.

Timeline

I know it's early, but my wife and I want to be prepared when recruiting season opens for the 2016-2017 school year. We know we will be staying at our school next year, but after that, we are looking to pursue a new opportunity. Search requires updated references to reactivate our accounts, which involves me asking my HOS and principal for recommendations. I have no issue doing this, but just wondering when we should actually tell them that next year is our last? What should we have in place by the time recruiting starts around October? Thanks

Re: Top 10 Schools in Middle East

First, I would add TAISM to the list in Muscat, Oman. Beautiful and safe country. Beaches, mountains, clean (by ME standards) People stay 5+ years easily there which is saying a lot for the ME. The package is pretty strong and the savings potential is large. Had friends stay 10 years and raise 2 kids there.

I would also add the American Community School of Amman. People tend to stay past their initial contract as well. Pay is strong, savings potential is good, benefits are great (a car is part of the package), and Jordan overall is an awesome country to explore. Plus, you can walk down the street to the liquor store (tons in Amman) and get your cold beer on a Thursday night!

Freeport Mining Schools

Anybody have info on these schools in Peru, beyond that they are attached to a mining company? Anybody have experience working for them or know anything about them? Thanks

Re: ACS Amman

Thanks for your viewpoint bbgun. Everything you have said is something I have heard as well both positives and negatives. I think the school is certainly on it's way up to being the top school in the region. It already pays more than AS Dubai.

Re: ACS Amman

Thanks for your perspective, Emily. I keep hearing similar things, so I am just going to assume that this is one of those better schools that falls under the radar. If somebody has specifics on the school or firsthand experience, I would love to hear your views!

ACS Amman

Could anybody give an updated view on the school, package, etc. for the American Community School of Amman? The reviews overall are pretty positive and I am hearing good things about it currently but would like to know some specifics. Thanks

Can anyone tell me about benefits and drawbacks of working at the International School of Amsterdam and American School of the Hague? Which has a better overall package? Thanks

I would add American Community School of Amman to that list.

Schools with trailing dependents

Hello:

Just wondering, if you were looking for positions where you could live comfortably on 1 salary with dependents, what countries/what schools would you be targeting? By living comfortably, I don't mean being a hermit and never going out or traveling but actually enjoying life without having to worry about money as much. Thanks

Re: Highest savings potential

It's true that you can make a solid income in Singapore, but friends at SAS and UWC there seem to always complain about how expensive Singapore is becoming. Yes, they make a lot of money, but it's still all relative to the cost of living. You might be able to come close, but over 100K seems like a stretch unless you never eat out, never travel, and never do any type of activity outside of your home. Personally, if I am going to live abroad, I like to indulge in experiences I wouldn't be able to have/do in the States.
