Re: Photo or no photo in CV?

I placed mine on the top left corner. I used a color printer though...

Ended up getting several offers, so having one on there is not a bad thing I do not guess.

Re: Should I follow up post Skype interview?

Could not hurt... but be prepared to hear something you probably do not want to hear.

In my brief experience, if they tell you that you'll hear back by early week and you have not they might have offered to another teacher. This happened to me twice. Somewhat rough but that is recruiting.

I hope I am wrong though! Goodluck

Re: filing taxes question

@sid

Thanks for this clarification! I was researching the 330 day rule and had some questions but this absolutely clears them all up.

My goal is to spend 2 weeks at home over Christmas and then once I hit the 330 day in the summer return back to the states to enjoy however much time I have left with the family.

Re: Recruiting agencies...Which is best?

@PSYGUY so you telling me that they hull up in their apartments/living area and not explore? Or not travel in their off time?

I get your point, but the lure to IT is living abroad. Well that and the money you can possibly make/save. You can also toss in the opportunity to work in a wonderful, advanced school but those are sometimes hit or miss. You have said it yourself, there are not many top tier 1 schools and those schools only hire from a small pool. Sot he vast majority of ITs are stuck with everything else. Speculation on your part for those new to the board/thread.

Re: Relocation Companies and Teaching License

I agree... Just take the 2 recert classes every 5 years. They usually are not bad and you learn a little something along the way.

Re: Two New Teachers looking for options

Apply at one of the companies like ISS/SEARCH ASAP! It takes some time to get the paper work completed and cleared. From that point your data base opens up and you can view vacancies.

Most school, when able, are looking for teachers with 2 years of classroom experience. (your LTS/subbing does not count in the IS eyes). However, you might be able to find some schools desperately looking to fill vacancies, especially in the summer months. I would assume that you and your GF would be viewed as a teaching couple (someone correct me if I am wrong. They are not married so unsure of that aspect). By being a teaching couple, you guys are a tad bt more marketable in some cases but also handcuffed in that if a school has only ONE opening, one of you guys are out of luck. There is also the possibility one could accept the job and the other wait for the opening that might pop up or sub when need. It is really a case by case situation with that.

TL;DR/Advice: Sign up for SEARCH/ISS and begin that process. Email recruiters from those agencies and begin to get your name out there. You might luck up and snag a spot. Most schools begin to get "desperate" mid summer for vacancies for the upcoming school year. You all might find a sweet spot to land.

Re: Cambridge Fair Updates

Sigh... sadly everything thing I wanted to say vanished from my comp...

But I got offered by a great school and accepted! I am anxious to get things going with my IT career.

My school scope was a rather narrow scope, meaning I only applied/inquired to schools I wanted to go. Sure this narrowed down my job search quite a bit but I felt great to be talking/interviewing with schools I could definitely see myself at. Overall, I had several interviews that went well and gained some encouragement from recruiters in my experience. I felt like I would be behind the 8 ball in terms of the rest of the field since I had no IT experience and a handful of years teaching in the US. This was not the case. I got interviews for schools that people said I basically had no shot at talking to. Sure interviews and offers are very different but interviews mean there was some type of consideration... recruiters did not waste their time talking to me.

Overall, I enjoyed my fair experience... I mean I did get a few offers and accepted a position after all lol! To clarify, accepted a position in a dream location for myself... a place I wanted to live at for a few years! Fairs are what you make of it. I did my research fair wise and school wise. I knew where I wanted to try and land and worked hard at it. I was fortunate to receive the interest/offers I did.

Re: Fresh certification, but no experience....help!!!

No as competitive as you think. When I was a member of SEARCH (before being hired) there were several PE openings.

There are things called Interns that some schools have. Of course, SEARCH has a list of those and unsure which schools are still hiring/looking for interns. Basically an intern is a "helper". Each school does them differently but think of a Teacher Assistant in college maybe a teacher's aide in the USA. Again, this is a subjective way of looking at their duties but a way regardless.

My true advice, is to return the the states and get the ever so elusive 2 years teaching experience. Get that and your job market goes from a pin prick of jobs to wise open. Also will be much less of a head ache job hunting.

Re: Cambridge Fair Updates

I can see your point, especially being a veteran. You feel like your resume/CV speaks for itself.

I can say that my in person interviews have went leaps and bounds better than the Skype interviews prior to the fair. Nothing better than an in person connection.

Re: Cambridge Fair Updates

Any updates from others here?

I have received a few offers so far to interview all at some great schools. Busy day of interviewing ahead.

I plan on typing up a "fair diary" and post once I get home Sunday evening.

Re: Cambridge Fair Updates

Thanks guys! Trying my best to snag a few interviews prior to or early Friday when slots open up. First timer as far as fairs go so I am looking forward to it, even though most say it is a "bad experience".

I am really going in without any expectations and if something happens great. if not, I will continue my email barrage to schools! haha
