It says their salary range is $35 - $52K. I think this includes everything they offer, so the actual salary part of it must be low.

I am not sure what tier they would fit into. I know the initial salary seems a little low, but they have "bonuses" that help make up the shortfall.

They have a housing allowance, annual flights home, tuition assistance and some bonuses built in annually to offset costs (food and such).

I would be curious as to what "tier" this school falls into. I hear that the school is one of the best in Mexico/Central/South America. I think that the package is competitive, but not top of the line. I did hear they have some bonuses at the end of the year to make it more attractive. Saving is important, but so to is teaching at a great school. It is an area we didn't really consider early on, but the more I learn the more I like the school and area.

My wife and I had two rounds of interviews, but they were pretty laid back. We interviewed with two principals and talked about everything from our family to our teaching philosophy to living in the city. They said they travel to some fairs, but were interested in talking to us before. They said they normally hire at fairs, but in some circumstances, they are willing to extend contracts before if they find the right person. They seemed pretty interested and I look forward to hearing back. It was not on the top of our list, but has moved up quickly. It would be hard to turn down a sure thing to try our luck at the fair.

My wife and I had interviews with ASFM and I was also curious about the number of positions. Of the open positions, only 2 or 3 are people leaving. The others are for new positions because of the growth. I have been doing a great deal of research about the school and city and it seems to be a pretty great place.

What would be a reasonable package to accept for a couple to live comfortably and save a good amount living in Monterrey? I am curious as to what the expenses would be per month that I would need to account for if I am offered a deal. Thank you for any help.

Thank you again for the feedback. A lot of great information and it has made me a little more interested in the area. What is the culture like in and around the city? I hear it is very "Americanized," but is there still Mexican culture that exists? What about the language, is it mostly English or is it predominantly Spanish?

When you talk about needing access to a car, is it reasonable to own one? What is the cost of living like in this area? Is it pretty easy to love with the salary from teaching? How about travel (flights) around Mexico and to Central/South America? Is it cheaper at all that you are in Mexico?

Do you own a cell phone? Is it pretty easy to obtain and have a cell phone in Mexico?

Sorry for all the question, but I really appreciate your info. This school has been in our top 5, but is slowly moving up the list the more I learn about it. A lot will come down to the package they have to offer at the school if it gets that far.

Sorry one more thing...What is the climate like year-round? Does it really get cold? How about rain/snowfall?

Thank you for the feedback. I have heard some good things about this school, but it is always nice to hear from someone firsthand that is close to the area. What type of things are there to to in Monterrey and surrounding areas? I have a family of four and we like to be outside. How far are you from the beach and is the river through town decent? Anyone know anything about ASF Monterrey in Mexico. I hear really good things about the city and the school seems to be reviewed well. I would just like to hear some first-hand reviews of the school.

I know there are some very good schools in Thailand, but I cannot locate any current information about the American School of Bangkok. Does anyone have any recent experience with this school they would be willing to share? Thank you.

I actually just called my phone company and this is what I was told...I can purchase a phone (iPhone or phone that can be unlocked) and replace the sim card when get to a destination. So that I am not paying double (US and new destination) I was told I can suspend service for the months that I am gone and reactivate when I need to use it in the US. I am hoping this works, but would love to hear from anyone that has done this. I just want to be sure I am able to use it in a new location, plus it is much cheaper to renew a contract than buy a phone outright.

As the jobs continue to pop up all over, it is not the easiest to always find employment for both of us (teaching couple) at schools. It makes me a bit nervous, but I am not sure how big of an issue this is. Are schools willing to "create" positions for the other spouse if one does not exist? Should we still apply to schools that only have a job for one of us in hopes they would take us both (as long as we are honest upfront that we have a spouse looking for employment as well)? How does this transfer over to the recruitment fairs?

Me - Business and Technology teacher, tech. integrator, MA in Curr. and Inst.
Wife - grade 1-8 English/LA, Reading Specialist, Admin. License

There are a lot of things one needs to get in order before making the move overseas. Obviously I need to secure a job, but in thinking about the move, what are people doing about cell phones? Do you have one in your home country? Do you get a new one in your new country? It is easy to keep in contact via Skype and Vonage, but I am still going to want to have a cell phone. Thoughts?
