Thanks for your posts, Pippa.
I secured my position without attending a fair, but the thought of attending one so had me a bit scared....having read so many posts on the uber competitiveness, the "meat-market" environment, etc., etc,
To read your words and those of Shadowjack, I think I have a more realistic view of what to expect and should I attend one in the future I will go with confidence and your posts in notebook.

Thanks for taking the time to write and share.
Hoping we get similar postings from all the fairs...would be nice to look at similaities and differences. Anyone up for sharing Toronto? Cambridge? San Francisco?

I have always completed my taxes on my own but going to my first international assignment I have secured the services of a tax expert....while I might feel comfortable completing my domestic taxes, I am a fish out of water when it comes to all the international rules and regulations...having help to navigate these waters is one less thing I will have to worry about.

The cost is minimal, the peace of mind priceless.

What are you most proud of at your school? Why?
What are the major initiatives being worked on at your school?
Describe the culture at the school.

I find questions like the ones above allow the interviewer(s) to brag a little and in the process share important information about their school and programs.

It is a Malaysian Tax. In order to qualify as a tax resident in Malaysia, you must be physically present in the country for 182 days within the tax year (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). The problem comes in your first and last years. If you arrive after July 2 of your first year then it won't be possible to make the 182 day requirement. The same when you leave at the end of your contract for another post if you want to leave the country prior to July 2. There are ways to get around this....arrive prior to July 2 and keep your travel the first 6 months in Malaysia, so many things to see. You can also "link" between the your first and second calendar years which allows you to make the required time commitment and allows you the ability leave that first year on authorized school trips, bereavement/health issues and holidays not exceeding 14 days. Once you have qualified as a tax resident than can come and go as you please without the threat of increased taxes.

I have a number of friends working at ISKL and they absolutely love it. The tax law is a pain but once you qualify Malaysia and KL are great places to live and work....great food, wonderful travel opportunities, cultural diversity.

I understand your frustration....when I first started following this forum I actually thought he was serious and committed to helping others. But it didn't take long to realize the truth. I just choose to ignore him and hope his advise, or lack there of, doesn't harm anyone.

There are people on this forum who do provide great advice, perspectives, and information. As I head out to my first International assignment, I can thank this forum for numerous tips on interviewing, resume writing, what to bring, job fairs, etc., etc.

Just remember, one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch.

I think he is just finishing his commitment...he's been there four years and is staying through next year. Their current posting asks for a three to five year commitment. I have no idea where he is headed.

Traveler1,
Thanks for sharing, really appreciate hearing from someone who has been there. The Directorship is open for the 2013/14 school year and the position sounds inviting. Seems like a school looking to grow, in a city that is coming into its own. Thanks again for your thoughts.

American International School of Vilnius

Can anyone shed some light about the school and living in Lithuania in general? Would appreciate any and all perspectives. Thanks.
