Your current qualifications used to be enough to gain you an entry level position in a language school some 15-20 years ago. A lot has changed since then.
You are best to look at the job requirements of language schools to which you would be most suited. That being English First, TBI and Wall Street. However, government requirements have also been made more stringent, requiring a bachelors degree + TESOL certificate for these positions. Many of these businesses have also moved to hiring Indonesian citizens as teachers with the odd foreigner thrown into the mix.
Also keep in mind all of these businesses, as well as private and public schools are either temporarily closed or running remotely. So there be currently bang on zero opportunities for someone in your position.
As an aside, yes there still exists a dying breed of unqualified teachers without degrees that do teach without the proper visa (KITAS). It's usually with private Indonesian schools in the satellite cities such as Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang. They are the token foreigner that that pops in to teach English, whilst flying under the regulation radar. Somewhat akin to picking up pennies in front of a steamroller.

There is one way you could quite easily reach USD40k annual savings. If you are willing to rent out your home whilst abroad this could cover half or more of your savings target. Dependant of course on the rental value of your home.

Re: Being good looking vs ugly
Does being good looking help you land you a teaching job? Of course it does. Along with giving you super powers in every other facet of life.
It's called the 'halo effect' and the benefits of being good looking are pervasive, and begin early.
Research on elementary-school children shows that adults view aggressive acts as less naughty when performed by an attractive child and that teachers presume good-looking children to be more intelligent than their less-attractive classmates. Yes, you're guilty too.
In one study, good grooming of applicants in a simulated employment interview accounted for more favourable hiring decisions than did job qualifications. Even though the interviewers claimed that appearance played a small role in their choices.
Good looking people are perceived to be kinder, more honest (all con-men and women are good looking) and intelligent.
Being good-looking gets you favourable treatment in the legal system, they're more likely to get help when needed and more persuasive in changing people's opinions.
So what if you're older and past your physical prime? To think that you need to somehow fix the weaknesses brought by your age is a trap – you can’t compete with a 24-year-old at being 24, and you don’t need to. Focus on your strengths instead, because a 24-year-old can’t compete with you at those either. It’s pretty hard for a fresh 24-year-old teacher to convince an interviewer that they're worldly and had their education philosophy shaped by years of experience, but for a 50-year-old with their shit together it’s almost a foregone conclusion.

Then the guy you're defending has amazingly similar syntax, an equally poor understanding of financial markets and gravitates toward ego-driven delusion bubbles. Peas in a pod.

Re: How are you preparing for retirement financially?
@OF2018, all very interesting. Your investment philosophy for an accountant continues to intrigue me.
Could you explain why you have so many individual brokers stationed around the globe working for you? Given your knowledge of "21st century digital finance", I am sure you'd be aware of the redundancy. Unless it's for your virtuous nature of feeding their hungry families?
I am also impressed that, as you state in another post, you are only 35 and have taught 13 years internationally. Does this mean you worked for the two global banks in Hong Kong and New York whilst doing your teaching degree straight out of high school? For the benefit of others wishing to follow your fast-track path to riches, please share your advice on how to impress the heads of global banks when 18, fresh faced, doing a teaching degree and with no banking experience.
https://internationalschoolsreview.com/ ... 421#p52421
I'm assuming you gained your CFA licence whilst doing your teaching degree and working for the global banks? Or was this more of a high school project? You know, whilst you were dabbling in digital finance in 2000, as a 17 year old?
If you have time, I'd like to hear why you spent only a maximum of 4 years (from 18-22) working in HK and NY for the global banks before switching to teaching? It seems a shame given such a rare and amazing opportunity.
Also, given your high net worth individual status as you say, I recommend you don't focus on the finances too much when it comes to teaching positions. I noticed in the link above you're seeking a new position "without sacrificing the salary too much". Surely the salary would be the least of your concerns nowadays with such financial security? My advice is take your foot off the pedal and relax. You've made it.

Re: How are you preparing for retirement financially?
@OF2018, with your vast experience in private wealth management and qualifications as a CFA, your approach to wealth accumulation strikes me as curious. Firstly, why would you feel the need for so many brokers? Have you not read 'Where are the Customer's Yachts?'
I am also curious as to your valuation strategies. You appear more drawn toward speculative or at best start-up investments lacking intrinsic value. Of all the accountants I've met that are stock investors (some of them running their own funds), they invariably adopt a value-based methodology, steering well clear of anything speculative that can't be valued. I'm curious why you haven't played to your strengths and followed more a Graham/Munger/Buffet path?
You really are a rare breed. One might say even unbelievable. I eagerly anticipate your explanations.

Returning After 2 Year Break
After teaching internationally in IB schools for the past 20 years, I would like to return home to help my daughter get set up for university. The plan is live back home for 2 years and take a break from teaching.
After this time, I'd like to again return to international teaching. My question, particularly for those like Sid in leadership positions, is would you consider hiring someone in my position? That is, highly qualified, experienced and with good references, but aged in late 40's and coming off a 2 year break.

Re: Trends for 2018-2019
As night follows day, after a 7 year slumber, the next resources boom is slowly beginning to take off again. 2018-19 will be the year natural resource producing nations will begin to see an uptick in expat numbers as existing mines ramp up and exploration begins to pick-up. Schools in Indonesia and Malaysia, who suffered most during the downturn, will be the ones to see the first benefits. The inflow will be relatively slow at first, followed by the usual flood.

Re: Experiences with teenage children
The research suggests moving secondary schools tends to have negative effects on student learning and well-being. If you do make the move, it would be important for your daughter to maintain those friendships from home and return to the same school as her friends.
Alternatively, you could wait until your daughter finishes primary school and commit to 6 years in Indonesia where she'd complete high school over there.

It's the same the world over, in any profession or way of life. Some people are yet to master the subtle art of not giving a f*%k.
There's even a book on it. No excuses.

So the elite schools still have one or two nationalities forming 80-90% of the population?
I would have thought there'd be a broader mix of Western and Asian nationalities in those schools...

Shanghai IS with Diverse Student Population
Out of curiosity, which of the the schools in Shanghai have diverse student populations? I'm hoping to avoid schools (for our teenage children) schools that are heavily (80-90%) one or two nationalities.
Thanks.
Thanks.
