I have been off line since my return to Kuwait as - and I TOO will complain about Kuwaiti beaurocracy-I haven't got a landline yet and ....too busy in school rewriting term overviews.....

As for being one sided, well I am simply defending the country which has given me an income, a family and a second home ( and a second passport). However, don't get me wrong, I too have gone through the trials and tribulations of being an 'expat' in Kuwait and I know what the problems are.I have also had 15 years of residence renewals, dodgy employers and almost unfair dismissals - not to mention 2 visits to the shoaon (Labour Office)......I am not wearing rose tinted spectacles but I will express my utter dismay and disgust at people who come here, take the money and moan,moan, moan. Look in your own backyard-no nation or its people is perfect.

Oh, re the blog ( www.donaldwheresurtroosers.wordpress.com ) - it's my own yes, but not private- come and post about Kuwait if you like, post links share stories- and yes I will moderate you if I feel like it, but what the hell, I am the boss there in my own private kingdom.

I think some women think that if you wear hijab you are thinking less of them, or something obscure like that!

No Texian, the opposite is actually true in my experience. Parents are DELIGHTED to see you in hijab. The bias comes when the 'visiting' western teachers in PORs takea dislike to it.....I know of two times when ladies went for interviews for PORs- each time the lady with MORE experience and MORE qualifications was overlooked fr the British woman without hijab. Interviewers at both times were western expat women.

Exactly, no difference at all, so why are people who are not invoved up in arms!!! Might give us dual nationality types a chance to get in there tho!

i can't actually understand-many things ....but- is it admin in the office type positions or as actual principals and such?

And a very astute mother wrote in the Arab Times today :

I agree that it’s an unwise move for Kuwait to take. Some parents will not bother to place their children in private ‘international’ schools if administrators are Kuwaiti. My daughter struggled with her reading at a large English school here and was given special help by a Kuwaiti teacher whose grammar and spelling was terrible, and the very expensive school did nothing about it.

On the other hand, I note that Mrs Spilchuk is a representative of the International Schools Review. Midway through the Katherine Phillips case this Review called upon western teachers to avoid taking jobs at Kuwait western schools. As their website is frequented by prospective teachers from many different countries they could have deterred many teachers from taking new jobs in Kuwait or from returning to their existing jobs. So here is a situation where ISR deterred western teachers from working in Kuwait and simultaneously suggests these schools should not employ Kuwaiti administrators or ESL teachers. Who do they suggest the schools employ then? Robots?

A rep from ISR commented today in the Kuwait Times on Kuwait's choice to put Kuwaitis in administration positions in private schools. She felt this spelt the end of 'proper' education here.

The ISR is quoted in today's Kuwait Times commenting on Kuwati Admin in private schools.Is this woman aware that many Kuwaitis are western educated ( through the very system she criticises) and that there are many dual nationality Kuwaitis who are educated from UK/US etc universities who would do an excellent job as Kuwaiti admin ? Her comments reek of the western colonial attitude- we are here to educate the arabs......pah!

My goodness, it's all gone very quiet in here after being quite hectic for a few weeks. Is everyone off on hols? Overbooked with cover in summer schools, or gone into hibernation?

Some people may be getting ready to travel abroad for the first time and might be feeling quite nervous- good luck to you all. Make sure all your paper work is in ordr and if you are going to Kuwait, then bring lots of passport size photos with you!

i am not a member so i can't read the reviews- but I say again, I have never heard a bad report on UAS. It was sour grapes.

Oh and completely off topic. Great one for the Irish winning the British Golf Open today!!!
