Re: Canadian Tax Question
I have been expat and repatriated a couple of times. The area is grey for sure and that is why no one gives a "straight" answer. I was advised not to file taxes while I was away and it all worked out fine. There are urban legends, but from my experience, and those opinions I have trusted, the CRA is very unlikely to "come after you" for the money you made overseas----particularly if there is a tax treaty in place between Canada and the country in which you work (which there typically is).

Re: Jakarta with young drpendents?
Air pollution less of an issue in Jakarta than most large cities, partly because during rainy season the air gets cleaned every day. Most days are blue sky days.

Re: Teaching couples w/3 kids where are you?
Shadowjack is spot on. We are at a large Asian school with 3 children. Many of the other large Asian schools also accept 3 from a teaching couple if they are Science, Math or Admin. Good luck.

Re: Housing in jakarta
Most new families live in a complex 10k from school. School hours are 7:30am until 2:40pm. Work-school balance is definitely encouraged and possible.

"Good" is relative. Since they are not year-round the athletes, they may not show the skill/talent level of NA athletes, but the IASAS schools have xc and track programs that the athletes take seriously and have access to excellent resources:

Cross-country is more like road racing due to lack of access to proper parks/trails.
Many of the schools in ISST also take xc and track and field seriously:

Same can be said for ME schools like ASD Doha and ASD Dubai and ACS Abu Dhabi:

And I don't have first hand experience with it, but northern asia schools compete in this cross-country championship. Schools that compete here may be worth looking at:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Asia-Pac ... 6692143820

JB, yes, I am from Ontario. I was advised by a friend not to complete a determination of Residency Status, so I didn't. We did achieve non resident status and this designation was communicated to us by mail after we filed our taxes the first year away. I should say that we did not own a home at the time, but we did keep bank accounts and credit cards and we were working in a country that has a tax treaty with Canada.

You'll find a list of countries that Canada has treaties with here, there are lots of treaties, even in the ME. Korea is on there:

We bought back three years for when we lived in the Middle East. We waited until we returned and paid the interest, but in hindsight it wasn't necessary to wait until we reestablished residency. We were over-concerned about keeping things at arms-length.

If the admin felt you were strong candidates they may entertain this type of meeting, but if it is summertime the admin team would be on vacation as well. Visiting a friend that is on faculty at a school and meeting the admin informally that way happens often enough, but of course we don't always have friends where we want to work.

There is a significant difference. Course work and credit hours no, but the respect given for the M.Ed is much greater. The M.Ed always sits further along the salary scale too. The B.Ed is not as universal, not as understood and thus gets short-changed, in my opinion. I'm not saying it's not respected, but definitely not to the extent of the M.Ed.

You could now try Search Associates. They tend to be slightly less discerning when considering potential candidates. They have a fair in SF two days after the ISS fair. The timeline would be tight now, but there is no harm in sending an email to ask if there is enough time for you to make this happen.

If all else is equal they will definitely hire you because you can coach a certain sport of need (or run a club). Especially if the director and the AD have a good relationship. The directors like to come home and tell the AD: 'well, I got that basketball coach you asked for.' I coached in the ISST. It includes IS Brussels, St.John's, AS Paris, AS London, ACS Cobham, ACS Hillingdon, Cairo AC, AIS Vienna, AS of the Hague, Frankfurt IS, Zurich IS. The schools take themselves quite seriously-in a sports sense. I would say, in most cases, to a greater extent than the actual caliber of the programs, if you know what I mean. Plenty of resources available to equip your teams with everything you want at any of these schools. And all of these schools will look to hire coaches to fill voids when they can. Definitely emphasize your own coaching strengths in your resume and in the interview. It makes a difference to any of these schools and many others too.
