I agree with mantissa. We just accepted our first assignment abroad based on a lead on JoyJobs. That lead was not posted on TIE or any othe website I searched on a regular basis. For the nominal fee, it's nice to have central place with vacancies from different sources.

Also, as mentioned before, if you're new to the international school scene, the guide they provide is a must. We also have our website with them and haven't had any problems corresponding with them whenever we needed the website or our CVs updated--AND it's free with the membership. Well worth the money.

My husband did a 2-week mission in Trinidad-Tobago when he was in the Marine Corps and got food poisoning so bad that turned out to be IBS. All but one of his squadron were got ill there, and he still suffers from IBS today. He also mentioned being propositioned by working ladies of which there were many--but I doubt that's the kind of social life you're looking for.

For what it's worth, I know of a teacher who turned down a position there twice (UNI 2009 and UNI 2011). We interviewed with them at UNI 2009 but didn't get an offer. We feel like we dodged the bullet because of all the negative reviews we've found since. Also, a close friend travels regularly on business to Torreon, and unless there has been drastic changes recently, safety is a concern. I agree with PsyGuy--if learning Spanish is what you care about, it may be best to look else were. There are other Latin American countries that have a difficult time attracting teachers because of the low wages.

Thanks for replying ccam.

We are a certified teaching couple (one with 5 years of experience/one newly certified), but we haven't had much luck finding a place with openning for both of us. We really want to get our foot in the door.

If you have any other insights, on any of the PIAGET schools, please email me at goinplaces11@hotmail.com

Piaget Academy (Indonesia)

Does anyone know anything about Piaget Academy in Indonesia (campuses in Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Solo)?

Thanks!

I learmed from a response to my other post ("Dubai") that ASD's enrollment increased from 900 to 1500 last year. We also emailed and applied on their website but have heard nothing. ASD is one of our top choices, so we really hope to get an interview with them at UNI.

Wow! American School Doha did cancel--another one of our top choices. I hope there are no more cancelations and that everyone makes it to UNI safely with the blizzard and all.

Thank you so much for information, Chuck!

Based on my research and all of the reviews on this site, ASD sounds like the best bet. Next year will hopefully be our first teaching abroad, so we're very excited and a bit nervous. We've come to terms with the fact that we will likely end up in the Middle East since it's our first time, and even though I'm certified and will soon have a M.Ed., I do not have classroom experience outside of student teaching (my husband is certified with 5 years experience).

Thanks for all of your posts on other topics--I've learned a lot and hope to contribute to this site when we have some actual experience out in the world!

All the best to you and your family.

American School Dubai - lots of vacancies

There are over 35 vacancies listed at UNI for the American School Dubai. Any idea why the number is so high? It's usually not a good sign.

Thanks!

Finally, some positive reviews!

My husband and I are interviewing with UAD at UNI, and I was very hesitant after all of the negative reviews I read... Thank you for making things a bit more balanced.

Thanks, Chuck.

ASD will be at UNI, and they have over 35 vacancies listed... Any idea why? It's usually not a good sign to have so many vacancies, but we'll try to get an interview with them as well.

Dubai

I'd appreciate any feedback on Universal American School (Dr. Gunther Brandt) and Dubai in general.

We have committments at home that requires use to save at least $20K a year, and I'm wondering if the savings potention is there. According to the UNI factsheet, we can each save 35% of the $36k salary at UAS, but with all of the posts about the cost of living in Dubai, I wanted to verify that this is in fact doable.

We had a Skype interview with Dr. Brandt, and he seemed very nice and honest. Our impression of ESOL as an organization from UNI 2009 was good, but there are numerous post that seem to contradict our first impressions. Please advise.

Any information on American School of Dubai would be great too.

Thanks!
