Re: HEL - PE Teacher seeks Leadership step
For what it’s worth, I’ve seen several PE teachers become AD by expressing interest and dedication and staying at the same school a while. No extra degrees or anything, so i can’t give any suggestions on a degree that would help. Good luck !

Re: DP experience > MYP ?
Two somewhat conflicting answer but I appreciate them both. Sounds like it’s probably in my best interest to try DP at some point in time if going to a “tier 1” school really becomes that big of a deal to me. Thanks folks

DP experience > MYP ?
Hi everyone. It is common knowledge that having experience teaching IB can make one more marketable in international education. However, something I’ve noticed is that far more schools seem to have only DP, in contrast with schools that have both MYP and DP. So, in terms of marketability, I’m just wondering if it’d be a bad idea (maybe bad is too strong a term) for one to stick with MYP for a long time or to do a bit of each program. In other words, would only having MYP experience be make one less likely to get into a tier 1 school than someone who only has DP experience?
Thanks in advanced.
Thanks in advanced.

ISS References - Teacher Rating
Hi everyone.
I was recently made aware that on ISS, schools can see a numerical rating for a teacher based on their references. I am wondering if anyone has any insight as to what the criteria is for this rating.
Also, I am curious if the scale for it is the same as a grade for school, where 5/10 is failing, 9/10 is outstanding, etc.
And does Search have a similar system? If so, does it differ?
Thanks in advanced.

Re: Preparing for China next Fall while abroad. Work/Visa docs. Job Hunt
Also, it isn’t hard to send money home. You just need the proper documents (not hard to acquire) and to spend like an hour or two at the bank. You just fill out a form when you get there and the bank teller will do the rest. Just takes a while to do it.

I personally got into China as a new graduate with a masters during Covid. And personally know someone who did the same just having their bachelors. My certification was still pending when I arrived. Got a legit work visa and all.

Re: Flexibility on age limits in China?
In my experience, it seems to be more of a guideline than a rule. There are quite a few teachers at my school that are over the alleged age limit. Some are new to the school this year, some have been here a while. I can only speak for this one school, though.

New York Initial Certificate to Professional
Hi everybody. I’ve tried searching and can’t find a clear answer to this question and figured I’d ask here simply because the members of this forum are typically much more helpful than the NYS Dept of Edu. Haha. I am wondering if it is actually possible to transition from the New York State Initial Teaching Certification to the Professional Certification without actually teaching in the states. It seems as though you need to complete two years of some sort of mentorship while teaching in NY, but hopefully I’m wrong. If it’s not possible, does anyone have any suggestions about how to move forward?

Re: Requesting criticism on my plan to become qualified/competitive.
I am a bit confused about what the issue is with the MA provisional license. I recently received a masters in teaching and have a bachelors degree in the subject I teach. The only experience I had was student teaching in the US, but I was fortunate and got a job at what I consider to be a quite good school that people have told me is tier 2.
That being said, my certification is still pending and has been for many months. I’ve been given low priority for it since I don’t have a job in the states. I am considering transferring to the MA certification once I’m actually certified because I won’t have to renew it if I don’t work in MA.
I’m wondering: would this really be a hinderance moving forward compared to having a different state’s certification? And, to recruiters, is experience in a school in the US really considered to be more valuable than earning all of your experience at a tier 2 school abroad?

Re: PGCE or TeachNow for QTS/professional teaching credential
Not trying to hijack this thread, but this raised a question for me:
If you have a US teaching certification and then get QTS, is it really difficult to get certified again in the US? In case you wanted to go back home eventually.

Re: Advice for a college student
It certainly doesn’t hurt to try. I managed to get my first teaching job this year at an IS with only student teaching experience. Same subject as you. So far, it seems to be a really good school also. However, I just applied on a whim and had no real expectations and it very well could have been a right place, right time type of thing. There is definitely hope tho especially if you aren’t very picky about location.

Re: Teaching International Schools in China
Consider doing an M.A.T. instead of an M.Ed. The M.A.T. is for people without a teaching degree. MAT is usually taken for career changers or people who recently graduated with a degree in a specific content area (i.e. history, English, etc.) and want to become teachers. The M.Ed is usually for people who are already teachers.
