American International School -- Vietnam

Can't find any information on this one. New school in its second year of operation, seems to be doing pretty well financially. Anybody know anything about it or talked to anybody who works there?

It seems that there are two schools in Shekou. The Shekou Int'l School and the QSI Shekou. Two different addresses and phone numbers. The one comment about Shekou was about the QSI school it appears. I'm asking about the other one.

Thanks for the response though.

Worldtravel-

I'm scared about that, too! It's only a couple of days, and granted I'm a specialist in an "in demand" field (heard rumors about more jobs than applicants). I'm still worried. I haven't sent out any resumes yet though, as ISS Bangkok just finished and people may have accepted jobs, and left old jobs so new jobs will open. *shrugs*

I think I've decided not to attend on Monday. It seems to be that it's only registration on Monday and not much else. At least it seems to be that the main stuff doesn't start happening until Tuesday. Like you I'm hoping I made the right decision. If I get a job offer on Tuesday or Wednesday then I guess I can always change my flight and head back to work early (I, also, have to take time off)!

Good luck for both of us hopefully!

Rainbow--

What have you decided to do? I will be going down to ISS NYC and am trying to decide the same thing myself. In looking at the schedule, it almost seems like Thursday might be important for any 2nd or 3rd interviews.

You don't need a roommate at all do you?

Years experience and work permits

Hi all-

I recently accepted a position that was posted as needing 3 years experience. When the director interviewed and hired me, he knew and understood that I only had 2 years experience. I'm currently trying to get all the paperwork to HR at the school I will *maybe* be at and the HR person keeps telling me I need a letter certifying that I have 3 years experience.

I am now being told that I cannot get a work permit without the letter of three years experience. I can understand that a lot of it has to do with government regulations in the country that I'm going to however, the director MUST have known this when he hired me and I was offered a contract. Even with student teaching I can't pull an extra year of teaching out of thin air. I have tried telling HR that the director knew of my lack of 3 years and hired me regardless.

Any advice here? Has anybody else have problems with this in the past? What have you done? I have sent a letter certifying the 2 years I have worked. I'm so frustrated about this ontop of all my other end of the year stresses, that I don't even know what to do.

Just to comment on the number of teachers versus the number of jobs. I think that it really matters what kind of teacher you are. For example, a friend in the international scene seemed to think that there were more elementary classroom teachers who are looking for jobs than there are jobs. However, that is JUST her OPINION. I have also been told that sometimes more specialty jobs or specific subject only jobs are often more common than people to fill them. However, that again may just be the opinion of those who told me, none of whom are connected with any of the major hiring agencies etc. who would probably have statistics on that.

And this is all generally speaking. As the previous poster said, the school also plays a huge role in all of this. There are schools that just attract more people than others, whether because of location, salary, benefits or whatever.

If you're flexible, don't have your heart set on anything 100% and have very few "non-negotiables", there are probably still jobs out there that can be found with a bit of digging.

Okay, I hope this answered your question, the brain is on vacation today, so I may have completely read the question wrong.

Re: Librarians Wanted
You should know this was a good year to be a librarian wanting a job. I received multiple job offers and more than one director commented that there was a dearth of librarians available. I am sure that there is a position out there with your name on it.
Figures that I got my act together slightly too late to go to the job fairs!!!

Thank you Goddess and Scribe for your replies.

Scribe-I do *edited as I don't know whose reading*. TIE lists a fair number of jobs still there for my specialty. I have been doing some applying that way, to a mixed responses. I'm hoping this week to send out some applications as I'm on vacation.

In terms of the medical condition, what I'd need to treat it is fairly common world wide, so I guess I'm not too worried. As it doesn't affect my work I'm determined not to let it affect where I go too much.

Goddess- Are you more specialty or general? That's great to know that there are still some good schools.

Thanks both for your replies...I'm really trying to decide whether to hold on for another year or move on!

ISS Philadelphia

Hi all--

I'm currently deciding whether to register for the ISS Philly conference or hold off until next year. I'm sure some of you out there have been to this conference and I was just wondering what the selection of jobs is like.

I'm a specialist and have been told by reliable sources (other people in my specialty) that there tend to be more jobs than people applying in my specialty. But being the end of the hiring season I'm wondering how many of these jobs still will be left?

I am single, so there will be no worrying about finding a job for a partner and have no other obligations other than to my student loans. However as just mentioned I do have to worry about adequate salary to cover my expenses here in the US and a medical condition that does not affect my ability to work.

So, Philadelphia and end of the season job conferences...are there still a good amount of 'decent' jobs out there or will it be slim pickings?

And, if you had to do it again would you have waited a year and just gone to the winter conferences or still done Philly?

Thank.

I had an interview with IS Manila and one thing I remember that they said during the interview is that the salary is low but it's tax free. Manila also offers a whole slew of bonus and extra features. The person I interviewed with said that a lot of people end up buying an iPod or something like that with their settling in allowance since all the apartments are practically fully furnished.

I don't know much about ESF. But congrats on both job offers!

Make a pro-con list, taking into consideration all the extra perks and factors about living both places and cost of living and look at it that way. Congrats again! I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you!

I have an add on question to this, when is too late to apply to ISS, and does anybody know if they're doing a summer fair (I didn't see it listed on their website)? I decided to get into this process too late to go to either of the winter job fairs left (San Fran or Boston). I'm registered with TIE but while I've been contacting schools I haven't been getting a lot of interest back (maybe because I'm not registered with any fairs?). Coincidentally I will be in San Fran when the fair is going on, wish I had started planning before!

At this point is it worth it, or would I have better luck just sticking with TIE?
