Not sure how cheap you thought the rent would be, but excellent value rent in Bangkok is one of the great drawcards.
Not to mention you can have a delicious meal for a couple of dollars.

Re: Bangkok Job Fair
From my understanding, it is not compulsory to attend a fair.
I did, got a great job and met some cool international teachers.
It's a bit like a tv show someone doesn't like, the easiest thing to do is switch off the tv or change channels.
No need to ban the tv show.

Re: Would you apply?
Personally, I would leave it unless for some reason they did not receive your initial application.
It may be useful to call the relevant person and ask if there is anything particularly lacking in your application.
Cheers

Re: Alternatives to Bangkok
Thanks for the excellent responses.
To add a bit more detail as far as social scenes go I would lean away from the SK status set.
More interested in down to earth types.
Both Vietnam and Myanmar do sound interesting and I would consider outside BKK for a semi-decent package.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies.
Apart from a decent school, social life and savings potential would be two key areas.
Yes, I understand those two can cancel each other out :)

Alternatives to Bangkok
So, I'm just about to complete my first two years in teaching and am looking for an international position in Asia.
I have spent the past two years in a hardship location and am looking for a city/area with plenty of social opportunities.
Ideally, I would land a position in Bangkok, however, I understand I am not the only one with this desire.
With this in mind can anyone recommend alternative cities that would fit the bill?
Cheers

Re: Hostile Deputy
Thanks for the reply, luckily only 7 weeks to go then off to a new school next year.
I think i will be a bit more guarded in my next position.
On the bright side, I learnt a new phrase, 'Bunny Boiler' :)
Cheers

Hostile Deputy
I've recently had an experience whereby the deputy at my current school who was once quite fond of me and would continually ask me to social events has now completed a 180. She is now hostile towards me and has let me know in week 3 of term 4 that her reference would 'not be one I liked'. My understanding of the situation is that the about turn is due to me not accepting the social invitations. The deputy is recently divorced and I feel that I am somehow paying for this. I am the only male teacher at my school. So, clearly I have removed her from my references, but was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and how did they deal with it. My feeling is that it is highly unprofessional as I have only ever received positive feedback from both staff and parents regarding my teaching.

Changing schools in the same country
If you change schools within the same country do you generally get an overseas hire package?
This would be on the assumption your initial position was an OS package.

Women of all ages at my school, however, I am the only male. So, more sexism.
