Re: Sick Leave Benefits

That is good advice. But I've found that you never know what a school may spring on you to try to save money. There's almost an infinite number of questions you could ask about possible scenarios. I actually don't ask too many questions like that at interviews because I think interviewers will think I'm a potential 'trouble-maker'.
But I have learned to get all promises in writing.

Is it late in the recruiting season?

I'm contemplating leaving my present school after finishing a 2-year contract. I am a single elementary teacher. Are top schools a good way through or finished their hiring for 2016/17?

Re: Teaching couple question

What would be the best way to present ourselves at a fair? Girlfriend/boyfriend? Partners? Fiances? Married? Would it matter?

Re: Teaching couple question

Thanks everyone. I've been told I'm marketable as a male primary teacher. But I am finding more and more males teaching primary. I was at one good international school where I'd say it was 50/50 male/female primary teachers. I'm going to stick with primary but possibly try to move into SS but where I am presently teaching.

Teaching couple question

My girlfriend and I are going to go out recruiting a year from now. We have both only taught elementary school but I have certification for middle and high school social sciences too. My understanding is that with teaching couples often schools try to hire one part of the couple to fill hard to fill positions like high school science and the other part of the couple will fill an elementary position. But we'd both like to stay elementary. With no experience teaching social studies but still certified would I get hired at a good school teaching social studies or should we both look for elementary positions? Or would the benefit of being a teaching couple be outweighed but us both wanting only elementary positions?

IAMBOG, any more info on how to get that UK Certificate/QTS certification? Any links you can share?

Re: Eh, Canadians, a question about taxes!

I remember reading 25 years ago about transfers of money $10,000 CDN and over, even domestic transfers, getting a small red flag and possibly looked into by RC. It was supposedly because of concerns it could be money from criminal activity.

Re: Eh, Canadians, a question about taxes!

I've looked into this too over the years. In 2000 I called RC and at the time I don't think you could fill out forms to renounce your Canada residency. Anyway, RC told me to cut as many strong and weak ties to Canada. But, he said if you go back to Canada and they find out you made piles of money they are going to do their hardest to get some of it from you.

Re: It is difficult to stay positive.....

I had an administrator who said schools often want teachers to move on after 3 or 4 years as they get bored and complacent at the school. But I think he's wrong. Teachers staying a long time is good for a school, but if at any time they become complacent then it's time to go; whether that's after 3 years or 15 years.

Nice cities in South America for....

I'm looking for cities or towns in Central and South America where one can live very healthy and inexpensively and where I can look for teaching positions or possibly even set up a very small language school; generating just enough income to keep me there. I would especially need:
-local fresh fish available and inexpensive
-fresh and inexpensive fruit and vegetables
-good areas and weather for running, biking, swimming, etc.
-hopefully fairly clean air?

If nothing else this will be someplace to spend this coming summer to regain my health after living in a polluted city which did not have sporting or enjoyable exercise opportunities or healthy food, etc.

Re: Alcoholics

I personally think there is often too much drinking going on with international teachers, myself included. Lots to say on this. But people who imbibe who may have a problem with this post may have that problem because it hits a little too close to home with themselves and don't want to admit it to anyone including themselves.
Anyway, I think there are many reasons why excessive drinking by international school teachers may be the case. I don't hold it against anyone. People like to enjoy themselves, they're often young, it's a . atmosphere, etc. But, for those who are alcoholics, someone recently said "Alcoholism is a disease. But it's the only disease you get yelled at for having". Let's not yell at anyone. :)

Nikor I'll wait a bit. Maybe I'll email ISR. I only filled the categories. But I do find those quite useful even with no comments. Sometimes the comments are too personal to really be relevant and too long winded. I find both useful but even with no comments I appreciate someone's effort.
