Re: Career Advice for Irish Guy? Please help

If the GTP is still available, that would be a cheaper route into teaching. Also, would you pay for the PGCE if you did it in Northern Ireland (given the dual citizenship possibility)?
Options 2 and 3 look better than 1.
There are also 'iPGCEs' available from a few universities in the UK which can be taken at distance. They can lead on to a masters but many schools (surprisingly including an very 'top end' school I worked at) accept them. They do not, however, confer QTS so some schools do avoid.
You are entitled to loans for the PGCE as an EU student. These need to be repaid when you earn 21kGBP or over.
Some additional info to mull over. Don't stress! If you are focused and determined, you'll get there I assure you.

Montessori international schools - not elementary?

Does anyone know any middle-high schools that are Montessori anywhere in the world (but international rather than local)?
Thanks.

Schools in Spain

Has any direct experience working in Spain? If so, would you be willing to share your experience here or in a PM?
Thanks.

Re: The impact of credits on salary

Thanks for the reply but it's incorrect. My current IS has salary increments based on credits. I'm interested to know if it's worth paying for them when I can, or if it's widespread. I know from colleagues it's not the only school that does it.

The impact of credits on salary

A bit of a survey I guess. How many schools do you know of where credits affect salary? I'm not talking about credits for re-certs or anything else, but simply - does your school reward additional credits outside of (teaching or postgrad) degrees?
Thanks.

Re: Use a recruiting service or not?

My close friend is about the same profile as you and certainly got fewer offers than when he had fewer kids, but he did secure a position in a top school. Good schools won't be so concerned with the number of dependents if you can live on the salary. He's never been near a fair. Of course, going to one is another layer of possibility but I wouldn't say it's necessary. Start applying early (before the fairs) and if no joy, you can always register later. Schools are advertising ever-earlier so you may have a position before the fairs even begin.

Re: Becoming qualified to work at international schools.

So you are teaching without a qualification - is that right?
You could look at the Teach Away program which I believe confers 'qualified' status in the US, or the iPGCE or PGCEi from the UK. This will not qualify you nationally but may be accepted by some schools abroad.
Some schools will insist on national qualification / licensure, while others will take you with almost any teaching cert. It depends what you are aiming for, as obviously the better schools will have higher standards.
Some schools insist on a Masters level qualification - good for advertising - and some don't give a hoot.
It's a varied world on the i.s. scene...

Re: going into a school v email

Most schools will insist on digital copies, if not applications via a recruitment system. However, there is no harm in s emailing to ask if you can visit the school as a prospective employee before you make a final decision on sending in your CV. (At least it's not hurt my job prospects in the past, and I was told after recruitment it was a plus point.)

Re: Savings?

If you want a solution to working out your retirement income, you can't get better than Andrew Hallam's (m i l l i o n a i r e Teacher's) advice. He's written 2 books, and I'd say his latest is the best (Global Expat's Guide to...) with crystal clear advice to follow, specific to your country of origin. He also has a site with lots of free advice. Well worth a look.

IF you are teaching DP, ask your school if they've a login for IB InThinking so you can take a peek at their resources.

Re: Project Based Learning?

There are some free training courses from pblu.org. They are affiliated to BIE and - in the past - offered PBL certification. Unfortunately, they don't any more but the courses should give you a good taste of what preparing for a PBL unit is like. If it's done poorly, content can really get lost in PBL so it's something to bear in mind. The previous posters give good advice. PM me for other resources if you like.

Re: Beneficial to have multiple teaching certificates?

It might be worth noting (if you don't already know) that once you have QTS from the UK, it doesn't expire. Correct me if I'm wrong (please) but from what I've gathered certain countries require that you renew your licence every year or so? If you know 100% you will not be teaching in such a place, the QTS would stand you in good stead internationally I imagine. (In the UK, you are obliged to undertake a certain number of PD hours per year, but it's very loosely monitored and no international or state school has ever asked me to prove any particular number of hours.)

By the way, what happens if your licence expires? Do you have to retrain or you are simply allowed to re-register under certain conditions. Curious by name, curious by nature...

"As teachers we should stand up for those who negativity effect our profession or confuse the new teachers who have dreams of IT. We all had those dreams once and I hate to think one man is making others dreams feel a bit hopeless or confused. Hopefully we are still chasing our dreams."
