Sick Leave Benefits

For those of you trying to get a job right now, I wanted to share an experience I had with my current overseas school. My child was recently sick and I missed four days of school staying at home with her. Each evening I notified my admin that I would be staying home again. Upon returning to work, I was informed that the four days I took off would not be paid time, but rather leave without pay. I was told, after a year and a half of employment, that the school policy was employees only received half a day paid leave if your child was two years or younger, a policy that was never shared with employees. Long story short, after a meeting with admin and pointing out that the faculty handbook had no reference whatsoever about employees staying home with their sick child, I was able to get paid for all four days.

I share this because when I interviewed with schools, I did not ask any questions about what type of support was given to teachers with dependents. I would have never accepted a job with any employer who didn't provide for paid time off to take care of a sick child.

I encourage you to read the prospective schools' employee handbook online, and if it is not clear, during your interview ask about the sick time policy and how the allotted days may be used.

Re: Skype interview question examples

The internet is full of interview question examples - I found probably 100 and was asked, during one interview or another, almost all of them. Spend some time searching.

Re: Biographical History help Search Associates

Like many said, it's not something one should be able to read about in your resume. I ended up editing mine again and again over time as needed. It's not set in stone, which is nice!

Re: Does your school have high turnover? Why or why not?

The turnover I see at my school is with the international teachers. The local hires tend to stay quite a while. Despite being a school who claims to be the best in the country, there is no established curriculum to work with, let alone follow. Every year the curriculum is re-created. I came to the school and there were no paper files to follow, no text books, no computer files. What did the previous teacher use??? There is a curriculum director, but his presence is not felt. The Director can't seem to get it together and lead our school. Each site admin has a different view on what needs to be done in order to be a strong school. We get thanked all the time for our efforts, but the words mean nothing. The housing stipend doesn't cover the housing costs, and it's taxed so it's less than the contract states. The fact that the school has been around for decades, and still teachers having to create new curriculum, makes this a school MANY international hire teachers are happy to leave after their initial contract is over.

Re: Newbie is Feeling Overwhelmed!

Yes! It really does take that long for each application! Be sure to look at the school's strategic plan and make sure your cover letter hits some of those points. You want your letter to be noticed!

Re: What do you wish someone had told you?

I wish I had known how incredibly difficult the first six months would be both professionally and personally. I've taught four different grade levels in the past 16 years as a teacher in the US, but coming to an international school (with no established curriculum in any subject!) made me feel like I was a first year teacher. I also had to spend the week before school cleaning out the classroom, filling up trash can after trash can with c.r.a.p.

Personally it has been very difficult to get happy here. I wish I had known how incredibly expensive it would be to set up a new home and buy a used car. Find out where other teachers your ages live and move near them. Proximity is great for developing friendships.

On the plus side - the students really are wonderful. My class is the most well prepared class I have ever taught. Ever. They come in with knowledge! The families are supportive, the kids are kind and they love learning. There are a lot of exploration opportunities in my new country. Some are close, some are hours away, but there are enough nooks and crannies to keep us busy for the duration.

Join TieOnline. Apply to every single school that catches your eye. Don't delay. Sending out twenty or more applications is not unreasonable. Make a spreadsheet so you don't accidentally apply to the same school twice or send the application to the wrong person's attention. Read the web and hone your cover letter, resume, and interview skills. There are lists of international teacher interview questions on the web - take notes, develop answers, and study them so you are prepared. Understand what textbooks/curriculum the school(s) use so you can provide educated answers. Once hired, keep organized, copious notes and bring photo copies of all your docs.

Educate yourself as much as you can on the country - join FB groups for expats, read the local online newspaper, make lists of what you want to do during your time there. Be sure to get a Visa credit card that doesn't have foreign transaction fees. Pick up some key words and phrases for the country. It will make you feel better when you can communicate.

If you haven't already joined Tieonline, that is another source for international teaching jobs.

Re: Advice for a Planning Single Mom

I'm a single mom, with 15+ years of teaching experience. I will be moving abroad to my first post, along with my middle school child. In the interviews I had, my child was brought up once or twice by the interviewing schools. I don't feel like it was a big hindrance. I feel my preparedness (or lack of) for the interview was more important, along with my experience, of course. Peruse the internet and find sources for interview questions and answers. Also be prepared to ask them questions. Those, too, are on the internet. Good luck!

Re: Contacting recruiters through Search

I attended a fair and nothing came of it. I kept sending in my applications as positions were posted via the Search email updates. I went to the school's web site and then sent my application packet directly to the HR person listed on the posting. In my closing paragraph of my cover letter, I always mentioned I was a registered member of SA. I made a few short lists, had some interviews, and accepted an offer! For me, direct applications got me a job, not the fair. However, I wouldn't have gotten the interviews without being member of SA.

Newbie with first interview jitters

My very first Skype interview is next week and I already have butterflies. It's a dream job. Those of you have been hired, is there something you feel really made a difference in your ability to land the job over someone else? I'd really appreciate your input. Happy New Year!
