Re: filing taxes

I'll be in the same boat next year. We are currently teaching in the US, but just sign our first two year contract with a school in SE Asia and will be heading over in July '15. I'll be doing all of the extension stuff in 2016 for this years taxes (2015). How does a US expat find an international tax accountant? A simply Google search brings back many results, but I don't know any of their reputations or who is trustworthy. Is there one main tax accountant company that many of you use? I'm sure our school will give some recommendations, but would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Re: India Provident Fund

Under current law, it looks like US expats can not withdraw contributions from the India Provident Fund until they are 58 years old. At that point, they can choose one lump sum, or pension. This could change if the US and India sign a Totalization Pact. If signed, then US expats would be able to roll the fund out of India when they leave, but until then, it sits in India until you are 58.

Cover Letter Question

Hi All,

As a teaching couple, when contacting schools about vacancies, should we write one cover letter for the both of us, or send individual cover letters?

Thanks!

Re: A year off to raise babies.

Thank you, this is really helpful!

My wife is an certified K-8 elementary teacher who has taught in a 1st-3rd multi-age Montessori classroom and is now teaching in a 4th/5th multi-age classroom. She plans to get involved in the school even if she stays home with the little ones: subbing, tutoring, PTA, or even as a reading volunteer in the classroom. I'm a certified K-12 PE teacher.

We are excited to go international (we both have studied abroad and my wife was a peace corps volunteer). We thought it might be easier to move into international teaching while our children are younger. How fun would it be to immerse the two kids in another culture and language during the "critical learning period" for language development?

Thank you!

A year off to raise babies.

My wife and I are a teaching couple with a two non-school aged children. How likely is it that a school would offer me an initial teaching contract knowing that my wife is a certified teacher, acting as a trailing spouse for a year?

The American International School of Muscat

I'm looking for current information (quality of life, workload, benefits package, and so on) for TAISM. Is Oman a country suitable for a teaching family with toddlers?
As for retirement -- my husband and I fully fund our IRAs each year and then throw an equivalent amount into an investment fund. We know we have to fund our own retirement and we want to have the same great quality of life when we retire.
Can you contribute internationally earned income to a US based Roth IRA? I was under the impression that you can only contribute US based income to an IRA.
