Call the school. My school accepts them. Granted, I don't think they will take on everyone but I know of at least 3 there now or that are coming in soon. Or ask around among friends. If you know someone or are an acquaintance of someone who works there, they might take you on.

I might be missing the joke, but the book is poor Teacher. It is quite good, and it helped me get my family started with investing.

I have the digital version of Global Expatriates Guide ready to be read....deep on the to read list though. His blog isn't quite as good anymore as it is rarely updated and only when he posts a link to an article he's written.

My wife and I are relatively new to the profession:

1st Position (May/June) - I had just graduated and our home country prospects were grim. Middle East Job posted on site. Skype interview. Not a great location, but it allowed us to get established in IT and we worked with some very good people.
2nd Position (Jan. Search Fair) - "Tier One" school in Asia. Combination of a few things let us land this post - including a healthy dose of luck and timing. There won't be a 3rd posting for the foreseeable future!

My wife and I had our share of frustrations at our previous school, but we worked with great teachers and we were both able to learn a lot about ourselves as teachers. We would never go back to that school or country, but there we are happy we did live and work there.

Where we are now is a world of difference. We work with more fantastic professionals (faculty, TA/EA, and Admin) in a great part of the world. Our PD is excellent. We are able to live a much better life here than if we lived back home in NA. Right now the toughest thing I am dealing with is trying to figure out a certain student, and trying to help that kid love school. This isn't far off what I would be doing in my home country, but, here, I have resources to help me with that.

There are many great, positive experiences out there ready to be had.

Think of it as a visual cover letter. My wife and I made a single page, double-sided version on card stock when we were at the fairs 2 years ago. We included images of us teaching and images that represented our philosophies. We included some text about our education and the odd quote from our referees. These worked well for us. In fact, it was our ichiro that landed us an interview with with a top school in Southeast Asia. They approached us at the pub in the hotel after seeing it with another school and said they wanted to chat. They didn't have positions for both, but it was a great contact.

There are a few annoying hoops with TieCare, but they have been fine for my wife, myself, and our 8 month old. We had an emergency birth and everything was dealt with quickly. They have an online filing system for receipt reimbursement which can be annoying to use if your internet is slow. Outside of those frustrations it has been fine. We are Canadian and use to only presenting a health card for care/coverage, so the bureaucratic nature of filing reimbursements grates on me.

There are a lot of positions because many of the faculty are moving on after being there for 5+ years. Many have been there for 8-10 years. People stay for a long time - the average tenure at 5/6 years - because it is such a great place.

When my wife and I were searching two years ago we applied to maybe 25 different schools. We also went to the Search fair in London where we landed a job at a school we had previously applied. It takes a bunch!

To add to this, I teach a very good school in SEAsia and there are at least two teachers on staff with 3-4 dependents. Not the norm, but it does happen.

All of the IASAS schools are non-profit if I'm not mistaken.

If you're applying directly, most likely it will be for specific jobs. Many schools have an online application process that forces you to apply for each job separately (ISBangkok as an example), but you can mention that your partner has also applied in your cover letter. If they don't have a system like that, I don't see an issue with using one cover letter for the both of you and attaching both CVs to the email/application. My wife and I did that and had success (truthfully, our success came form going to the fairs, but we did have some interest prior). We only had one issue where the school didn't seem to understand that we were a package - American School of Dubai. They seemed to be very disorganized, and couldn't understand that we were applying separately but as a package. They offered interviews for one and not the other. When we told them the issue they were still oddly confused.

If you go to a fair, I would suggest making more visual cover letter that includes info about both of you (front and back, in color, and on good stock worked for us).

The Canadian government has a whole list of what they consider primary and secondary ties. They are a bit wishy-washy about the whole thing, which can be incredibly frustrating. There is no hard and fast rule as to whether they will or will not consider you a resident for tax purposes. If you call them they will tell you submit the NR73 form, which is supposed to help determine your eligibility for non-residency....but it isn't a binding document on their part. Anyway, from what I understand these are some of the items in each group of ties:

Primary:
Immediate family (wife, child) staying in Canada
House/property not rented at fair market value

Secondary:
Vehicles
Driver's license
Health card
Passport (if you can believe it)
Membership to social groups
Bank accounts
Credit cards

Debt I'm not too sure of. From what I understand student debt isn't a problem. I would contact a lawyer or accountant who specializes in this sort of thing if you want to be extra careful.

We initially filed as normal...we hadn't cut enough ties yet. My wife and I are now non-residents for tax purposes, so we don't file any longer. If you plan on being abroad for a while, I would suggest you sever as many ties as you can so you can avoid paying tax.

ISM has an internship program if that interests you.

Some really great schools have intern programs that might work well for you. My school takes on 3 interns a year and they do a wide range of things. As far as I know, all 3 were consistently subbing throughout the year. One did well enough to earn a position at the school.
