I know a lot of Canadian teachers who have taught in the UK. It is a great way for new teachers entering the job market to get teaching experience. I know there are a couple of recruiting companies such as Classroom America http://www.classroomcanada.com/html/Cla ... merica.htm

and Timeplan. I am not connected to either of those companies. The biggest issue (which others have mentioned) is getting a visa which you have to do all by yourself.

I am pretty sure that my passport has been scanned whenever I return to Canada.

Anyway, back to the original topic... I worked overseas for a couple of years. When I returned home to Canada, I went to an accountant and she had me fill out some forms declaring non-residency in Canada due to having residency in another country and included that in my tax return. From what I understand, it is not a guarantee whether or not CRA will accept your non-residency. I was lucky and didn't end up paying tax in Canada for the years I was away. I will say that I did not have much ties to Canada with the exception of a driver's licence, bank account, and credit card.

Definitely, as another person here already suggested, get an accountant. It is so worth paying someone else to deal with CRA for you. :)

I have seen 21 library positions on tieonline.com. If you are not a member of that site, I think it is worth joining.

I definitely agree that you will be asked about what types of assessments you can administer. (WIAT, KTEA, Woodcock Johnson, and other norm referenced tests plus curriculum based measures (CBM)) I have been asked questions about differentiated instruction, RTI and UDL. I have also been given a student profile and asked how I would help this student. Also, you may be asked about what Assistive Technology you are proficient in using with students.

For Italy, you will most likely need to get your documents translated to Italian.

Cherrypop- Probably not crazy... I am just basing my opinion of your situation upon my province's teaching certification. you see, I'm Canadian so teaching certification is a bit different from your state's credentials. I typically can only teach subjects that I have a fair amount of university coursework in. I could probably teach a different subject in a remote location but definitely not in my school district.

I think the only way to find out whether or not you can get an art position is when you start applying for jobs.

In the meantime, try to get some teaching experience in the other subjects that you are planning on getting credentials for.

I agree with Psyguy. You need to have suitable curriculum and instruction training in your subject area especially something as specialized as art. I have observed a couple of middle school art classes and there is no way I could teach that subject without training even if I was a talented artist. Art teachers have to make sure they meet all of the prescribed learning outcomes of whatever curriculum they are using. If you really want to teach art I would start taking some university art courses and art education courses if possible.

If I were you, I would focus on ELA as your subject. You already have a BA in English, EFL experience (though this won't count towards international teaching experience but still useful to include on your CV), and you will have certification in ELA. From what I understand from this forum, ELA seems to be a growing area and full of opportunity.

I can't offer any advice about when to go to a fair as I am looking for a position as well. But I do think that you should re-post this in forum 1. There just isn't as much traffic here.

In the meantime, from the advice I have read, sign up for tieonline and search for jobs there as well.

Wow! Great post, Psyguy! I am still laughing. Seriously, your post really helped a lot. One school I am interested in pays just under 24,000 RMB per month and doesn't pay taxes or provide housing. It is not as good of a deal as I thought.

I remember that the salary was listed as $44,000 Canadian. That was two years ago so my memory could be faulty. :) But I do also recall that the salary listed was close to the starting salary in many districts in BC ($45,000- 47,000).

You could try Maple Leaf Schools in China. A couple of my classmates from my B.Ed program taught there. I met another person who taught there for a bit and then landed an IB international school position in another part of China.

I had an interview with them once. It sounded like a good place to work at. I think they are interested in either single teachers or couple teachers (which I fit in neither category). I noticed that they have a new principal and do not state their starting salary on their website like they did before under the old principal. I can't offer an opinion about whether it is a good school or not but Bundang is a good area in Seoul to live in. There are lots of western ammenities so it is not a hardship to live there and it is right on a subway line.

You would need a BC teaching certification to teach there. So, if you have a teaching qualification in another province, I would see about applying for your BC certification.

Spruxy- where is your wife getting her certification? I am looking for an online way for my husband (Canadian) to get certified as a teacher. I have had a look at the College of New Jersey Global Education certification program and international students cannot get New Jersey state certification. Any help with this would be great!

I taught EFL there for two years before I became a certified teacher. I enjoyed my time there and would consider working there again. I found Koreans to be very hospitable and friendly. It's not a perfect country to work in... but it is a very easy country to live in, I think. The Korean language is super easy to learn to read and write which in turn makes ordering food, catching trains and buses, finding places much easier.
