Yangon International School

Comments: YIS is the latest addition to the ILBC network of schools in Myanmar - the first international school is the chain. It is privately owned by a Burmese philanthropist, but administered by ISS. The school opened in September 2004 as K-8, with the intention of adding a grade each year over the next four years. There are currently less than 100 students, with an entirely expatriate faculty of a dozen - plus a locally-hired teacher of Myanmar studies.

Myanmar is a vaguely uncomfortable place to live in. Much of what ought to be news here reaches us via CNN or BBC long before it is referred to in the local press.
